Insect’s Pheromone Identification: Perspective to Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Scientists and pest control specialists have known about these chemical communication among insect species. Based on previous review the constraints and use of pheromone and their possible recommendation on behalf of Bangladesh agriculture, steps of new pheromone identification in focused important. Since insect genotype also changeable due to different environmental conditions, so that this review emphasized on the re-examination and /or re-identification of pheromone components of an individual insect. It also revealed on new identification of pheromone components for the insects of economic importance. It is reported that different strains of the same insect species showed their dissimilarity in pheromonal communication. So that the present review illustrated the technical steps to identify a pheromone components, which might be helpful for mid-level chemical ecologists for Bangladesh. The pheromone technologies for control of major crop pests in Bangladesh are still not oriented. That’s why this review emphasized on more attention to the authority to increase the research works and project facilities related to develop and promote pheromone techniques. It is highly recommended the need to identify the pheromone components of available insects in Bangladesh, to increase availability of pheromone in market, more investment in research and development, introduction of newly identified pheromone for specific pest, to assist government and non-government organizations in crop production.

Objectives:

1. To review the constraints and use of pheromone and their possible recommendation on behalf of Bangladesh agriculture, steps of new pheromone identification in focused important.

Methodology:

Identification of pheromone - In Bangladesh, there are many of the harmful insects available which are occasionally different in strain/species due to geographical or environmental variations from other countries/regions. There are many reports indicated the different chemical communication among the same insect species habitat due to different geographical region. Based on previous reports author emphasized to identify/reidentify/reexamine the pheromone of harmful insects before going to import or synthesize such pheromone in Bangladesh. Simply, the steps of the identification of pheromone components of an insect species are reviewed.
