Heterosis and Combining Ability Analysis in Indian Mustard (brassica Juncea L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Half diallel analyses was used to identify the high heterotic crosses and their relationship in term of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of seven parents of Brassica juncea L, Indian mustard at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during 2006-08. The parent J-7 and J-9 were good general combiner for days to flowering and maturity; J-7 for number of primary branch and seed yield per plant and J-8 for thousand seed weight. Out of 21 F1s, the hybrid C-16 was superior specific combiner for number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branch per plant, number of siliquae per plant and seed yield per plant; C-13 for number of primary branches per plant and number of secondary branches per plant, C-15 and C-21 for maturity, C-8, C-12 and C- 17 for thousand seed weight; C-5, C-8, C-11 and C-12 also good for seed yield per plant. The GCA effect was significant for plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity and thousand seed weight and the significant SCA effect was also observed for all the trait except days to 50% flowering, siliqua length and number of seeds per siliquae. The higher magnitude of GCA variance was observed than that of SCA variance for plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, length of siliquae, number of seeds per siliqua and thousand seed weight.

Objectives:

1. To identify potential parental material for producing high yielding varieties; 2. To isolate better cross combinations line for hybrid varieties; 3. To observe the GCA and SCA variance for seed yield and yield contributing components in Brassica juncea genotypes.

Methodology:

Seven parental genotypes were crossed in a diallel fashion excluding reciprocals during rabi season of the year 2006-07. The parents and their 21 F1 were grown in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replication in rabi season of the year 2007-08 at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh. The Spacing was 40 cm x 10 cm. The land was ploughed properly and fertilizers were applied at the appropriate dose. Proper irrigation and drainage was maintained during the growing period. Observations were recorded for developmental, quantitative and qualitative characters on single plant basis. Data on days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of secondary branches per plant, number of siliquae per plant, length of siliqua, number of seeds per siliqua, thousand-seed weight (g) and seed yield per plant (g) were subjected to diallel analysis following Griffing’s diallel method 2, model 1.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that mean squares of both GCA and SCA were significant at (p≤ 0.01 and p≤ 0.05) for all characters. The mean square due to GCA was significant for plant height, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity and thousand seed weight indicating that the additive gene actions was predominant for the expression of these characters. The significant mean square due to SCA was also observed for plant height, days to maturity, number of primary branches/plant, number of secondary branches/plant, siliquae/ plant, thousands seed weight and seed yield/plant indicating that the non-additive gene actions was predominant for the expression of these characters.
