An experiment was conducted at the experimental field of the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and weed managements on blackgram (Vigna mungo) during the period from March 2007 to May 2010. Different managements of nitrogen [0, 20 kg N ha-1 at vegetative (30 DAS), 20 kg N ha-1 at vegetative and flowering (45 DAS)] and weeding [No weeding, one weeding at vegetative (30 DAS), two weeding at vegetative and flowering stage (45 DAS)] were integrated. Results showed that application of 20 kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha- 1 with one weeding at 30 DAS showed significantly higher values of all growth parameters like leaf dry matter(7.47 g), shoot dry weight(7.10 g), reproductive dry weight(7.16 g) and above ground dry weight(21.73 g) plant-1. This treatment also produced significantly more number of pods (24.96) plant-1, number of seeds (7.47) pod-1, 1000-seed weight (38.34 g), harvest index(36.18%) and 45.44% more seed yield(1917.31 kg ha-1) over the control.

1. The experiment was conducted to find out the optimum level of nitrogen and intensity weeding along their application time for achieving maximum growth and yield of blackgram.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the summer season of March to June, 2010. The experimental field was located at 23o 77’ latitude and 90o33’ E longitude at an altitude of 9 m above the mean sea level. The soil belongs to the Agro-ecological zone – Modhupur Tract (AEZ 28). The land topography was medium high and soil texture was silt loam with pH 8.0. The climate of the locality was subtropical which was characterized by high temperature and heavy rainfall during kharif season (March-September) and scanty rainfall during Rabi season (October- March) associated with moderately low temperature. Twelve treatments were comprised viz. T1= No nitrogen and no weeding (Control), T2 = N0 nitrogen + two weeding (First at 30 DAS and second at DAS), T4= 20 kg N ha-1 as basal with no weeding , T5=20 kg N ha-1 as basal +one weeding at 30 DAS, T6 =20 kg N ha-1 as basal + two weeding (First at 30 DAS and second at 45 DAS), T7 = 20 kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha-1 as split at 30 DAS with no weeding, T8=20 kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha-1 as split with one weeding at 30 DAS, T9 =20 kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha-1 as split at 30 DAS + two weeding (First at 30 DAS and second at 45 DAS), T10 =20 kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha-1 as split at 30 DAS + 20 kg N ha-1 as split at 45 DAS with no weeding, T11 =2o kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha-1 as split with one weeding at 30 DAS + 20 kg N ha-1 as split with one weeding at 45 DAS and T12 =20 kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha-1 as split with one weeding at 30 DAS + 20 kg N ha-1 as split with one weeding at 45 DAS. The variety of Blackgram used for the study was BARI mash 3. The experiment was laid out Randomized Complete Design (RCBD) with three Reapplications. Complete block design (RCBD) with there replications. Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) and Muriate of potash (MP) were used as a source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, where nitrogen was applied as per treatment as P2O5 and K20 were applied as basal at the rate of 48 and 33 kg ha respectively for all plots. The seeds treated with Bavistin before sowing and seeds were sown 15 marches, 2010. The seeds are sown an solid rows keeping 30 cm between two rows. Thinning was done 10 days after 10 days after sowing and 15 days after sowing to maintain plant population in each plot as around 333333 plants ha-1 was done as per treatments. Ten plants from each were randomly selected for data weight, pods plant-1, seeds pod-1 and 100 seed weight. Data on yield kg ha-1 was collected at harvest from pre demarcated three linear lines of each plot. The recorded data were then statistically analyzed to obtain the level of significance using MSTAT-computer package program. The means were separated of flowing Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

The results revels that nitrogen and weeding intensity had significant effects on the dry matter accumulation and yield of blackgram and it may conclude that blackgram gave maximum production of yield during kharif-1 season when treated with 20 kg N ha-1 as basal + 20 kg N ha-1 as split at 30 DAS + two weeding (First at 30 DAS and second at 45 DAS). This result need to be verified indifferent ago-ecological zones of Bangladesh.
