Study on Growth and Flowering of Five Carnation Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Horticultural Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh, during September 2013 to March 2014. Experiment consisted five carnation varieties viz. White angel (V₁), Red carpet (V₂), M-red (V₃), Pink purple (V₄) and Rainbow pink (V₅) following RCBD with three replications. Maximum plant height (81.1 cm), number of shoot (7.5/plant), number of internode (18.3/plant), first flowering (73.1 days), flower stalk length (74.5 cm), flower diameter (6.2 cm), number of petal (22.4), bud length (3.3 cm) and diameter (9.1 mm), fresh weight (29.7 gm) and flower per plant (8.1) was found from Red carpet. Significant variation was also found in of chlorophyll percentage, girth of flower stalk and calyx percentage among the varieties.

Objectives:

To evaluate the growth and yield performance of five carnations varieties.

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at Horticultural farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during period of the September 2013 to February 2014 to evaluate the growth and yield performance of five carnation svarieties. Five carnation varieties were used in this experiment viz. V₁, white angel; V₂, red carpet; V₃, M-red; V₄, pink purple and V5, rainbow pink collected from Japan. The experiment was laid out with randomized completely block design (RCBD) with three replications. 45 days aged seedling of carnation varieties were transplanted in the main plot. Size of the plot was 1 m width × 5 m length and bed to bed distance was 50 cm. During the experiment, the soil was maintain to apply equal amount of well decomposed cowdung and inorganic nutrient at N:P:K was maintained 1:1:1 ratio and, watering and weeding were followed by visual observation. Data were collected on different parameter like- plant height, number of shoot/plant, number of internode/plant, days to first flowering, flower stalk length, girth of flower stalk, flower diameter, number of petals/plant, bud length, bud diameter, calyx splitting, fresh weight and flower/plant. Chlorophyll content was measured by using SPAD-502. Digital caliper was used for recording diameter. Data were analyzed by using MSTAT-C computer package program. Mean comparisons was conducted and analysis of variance for each of variety was represented by F-test. Differences between varieties were evaluated by Least Significance Difference Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.

Carnation varieties showed a significant variation for different growth and flowering characters and Red carpet variety showed best performance.
