Incidence and Severities of Cercospora Leaf Spot (cls) on Different Strain of Growing Mungbean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five different variety/strain of winter Mungbean viz. Binamoog-1, Mut 2a(5)B, MC38, MC89, MB63 was used to determine incidence and severities of growing Mungbean. The incidence and severities of CLS recorded 45 days after sprouting were found to be consistently increased with the increased maturity of the crop growth in the field. The critical development period of CLS was identified from mid November to 1st week of December when most of the crops were in the maximum flowering, pod formation and ripening stages of crop growth in rabi season. However the amount of both incidence and severity of CLS were significantly less in the tolerant Binamoog-1 and Mut 2a(5)B, then those of the susceptible strains MC38, MC89 and MB63. Highest seed yield was obtained in the CLS tolerant induced Mutant 2a(5)B and the lowest in a susceptible strain MB63.

Objectives:

1. The present piece of work was undertaken to assess the rate of progress and the patterns of development of CLS in tolerant and susceptible strains of Mungbean under natural conditions in the field, and identify the critical stages of crop growth with respect to natural development of CLS in the field.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during winter season at the field laboratory of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) Mymensingh. The tested materials include five advanced Mungbean variety/strain viz. Binamoog1, Mut 2a(5)B, MC89, and MC38 developed at BINA along with a Cercospora Leaf Spot (CLS) susceptible local collection, MB63 from Kishorgonj. The maturity of 80% of pods the crop was harvested plot wise by uprooting the plants and the pods were separated to record seed yield. The collected date were analysed statistically by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) and the mean differences were tested by least significant difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

The development of Cercospora leaf spot in five strains of Mungbean viz. Binamoog-1, Mut 2a(5)B, MC38, MC89, and MB63 was studied under natural field conditions during winter season. The incidence and severity of the disease increased with maturity of crop growth. The incidence and severity were significantly less then in tolerant then those of the susceptible strains of Mungbean.
