Study on Cattle Fattening Practices of Some Selected Areas of Rangpur District in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted to investigate the cattle fattening programs of rural farmers in Rangpur district of Bangladesh through field survey. Data were collected through interview schedule personally from 30 farmers in three villages of sadar upazilla. Parameters studied were the socio- economic conditions of the farmers, factors associated with cattle fattening, daily routine activities, Feed marketing system of fattening cattle, problems of fattening cattle and cost benefit analysis. In this study 40% farmers had primary level of education and 30% had no education. About 70% farmers used cattle of 2-3 years of age and 26.7% farmers used cattle of 1-2 years age. About 70% farmers used bulls and 70% farmers had an average of 1-4 cattle for fattening. Fattening period of 3-6 months and 7-12 months were reported by 50% and 40% farmers respectively. Separate houses for cattle were provided by 70% of the farmers. About 63.4% farmers washed their cattle in ponds and rivers regularly. About 60% farmers had taken short training on livestock rearing from Rangpur Dinajpur Rural services (RDRS) Youth Training Centers and 80% farmers dewormed their cattle before starting the fattening program. About 86.6% of farmers reported lack of credit as the major problems of cattle fattening. Average buying and selling prices and net profits were Taka/cattle 7528, 9542 and 2055, respectively.

Objectives:

1.To investigation the socio-economic background of the rural farmer related to cattle fattening, 2. To investigate the feeding management and marketing system of fattening cattle, and 3. To calculate the cost and benefit of cattle fattening.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the three villages, namely Keranirhat, matiapara and Nozirerhat of Sadar Upzilla under the Rangpur district. The duration of the study was four month buying to selling of the fattening cattle between march to june 2010. The farmers were selected who rear or brought cattle for fattening and were able to give information when necessary. Ten (10) farmers were randomly chosen from each village. Therefore, in total 30 farmers were chosen for collecting data to satisfy the objective. The data were collected through direct interviewing to the farm owners. To attain accurate and reliable data, care and caution were taken in the course of data collection. Data collected from the farmers were compiled and tabulated. Tabulated data were arranged as percent value for easy understanding, analyzed and to have definite conclusion.

Achievement/Findings:

Both semi-intensive and stall feeding system were practiced by the farmers for beef cattle production in the study areas. Semi-Intensive feeding system was observed income of 70% farmers. In adverse situation available rice straw was fed by 92% farmers. Cut and carry system for green grass supplies to the fattening cattle were reported case and sometimes grazing also practiced. Type of concentrate feed used cattle fattening were rice polish, wheat bran and mustard oil cake. About 50% of farmers used tree leaves (like bamboo, banana) during scarcity us feed. The farmers also used rice gruel, boiled rice and whole banana. Farmers usually parched most of the concentrate feed from the local market. They always used tube well as a source of drinking to their cattle.
