Influence of Compost and Fertilizers on Growth, Yield and Some Biochemical Composition of Summer Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on the effect of commercially produced compost (Paragon jaiba sar) on growth, yield and chemical composition of summer tomato was carried out during April to September 2009. Compost was used at the rates of 0, 3 and 6 t ha^-1 while 4 doses of chemical fertilizers used in this experiment @ 0, ¼, ½ and full recommended doses. The growth parameters like plant height, number of leaves plant^-1, fruit length and fruit diameter were significantly influenced by different doses of compost alone or in combination with different levels of chemical fertilizers. Similarly, among the yield contributing characters number of cluster of flower plant^-1, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight plant^-1 and fruit yield of tomato under the study also varied significantly. The highest number of flower cluster plant^-1 (5.00), the number of fruits plant^-1 (3.33), fruit length (36.30 mm), fruit weight (0.104 kg plant^_-1) and yield (28.61 t ha^-1) were found in the treatment comprised with full dose of compost and ½ dose of chemical fertilizers (T₁₁). The effect of compost and chemical fertilizers on biochemical composition of tomato fruits such as pH, vitamin C, protein, N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S content were also significantly influenced by different doses of compost alone or in combination with different levels of chemical fertilizers.

Objectives:

1. To find out the effect of compost (Paragon jaiba sar) alone and or with integrated chemical fertilizers on the growth and yield contributing characters of summer tomato (cv. BINA tomato-3); and determine the biochemical composition and nutrient content of tomato.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was carried out in the net house of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with BINA tomato-3, a summer variety known as high yielding and disease resistant. There were 12 treatments and the combinations of the treatments were: T₁ = Control, T₂ = ¼ recommended dose of chemical fertilizer (DCF), T₃ = ½ DCF, T₄ = Full DCF, T₅ =½ recommended dose compost (DOC), T₆= ½ DOC + ¼ DCF, T₇ = ½ DOC + ½ DCF, T₈ = ½ DOC + Full DCF, T₉= Full DOC, T₁₀ = Full DOC + ¼ DCF, T₁₁ = Full DOC + ½ DCF, T₁₂ = Full DOC + Full DCF. The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications and total numbers of pot were 36. The recommended doses of chemical fertilizers and compost were: Urea @ 400 Kg ha^-1, TSP @ 350 Kg ha^-1, MOP @ 250 Kg ha^-1 and compost @ 6 ton ha^-1. Compost used in this study was supplied by courtesy of Paragon Agro Limited, Dhaka. The nutrient status of the compost is organic carbon = 13.02, N = 1.01%, P =1.78%, K =1.40% and S= 0.05% (Anonymous, 2000). The doses of compost and chemical fertilizers were applied as per the treatments. Compost and recommended doses of TSP and MOP were mixed thoroughly with soil. Urea was applied in two installments, one half at the final pot preparation and the rest after 30 days of transplanting. Healthy and uniform sized seedlings at 30 days old were uprooted separately from the seed bed and two seedlings were transplanted in each experimental pot. Vitamin C in tomato fruits were determined by the indophenol dye extraction method while the chemical constituents were measured following the standard methods.
