Prevalence of Gastrointestinal Parasitisms in Dairy Cattle in Muktagacha Upazila of Mymensingh District, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Parasitic infestation rate and the efficacy of different commercially available anthelmintics drugs in dairy cattle (dairy cows, heifer and calves) were investigated in Muktagacha Upazila, Mymensingh District. The infestation rates of different parasites in cows, heifers and calves were 72.27%, 75.95% and 83.59% respectively. There were no remarkable differences among the infested animals but highest parasitic infestation rate was recorded in calves (83.59 %). Among the four anthelmintics drugs (fenbendazole, oxfendazole and morantel citrate and teniazole) best result was found for fenbendazole dosing (Efficacy100 %).

Objectives:

1. The study was carried out with smallholder dairy farms to determine the prevalence of parasites and efficacy of some anthelmintics in dairy cattle.

Methodology:

Study area and study period: The experiment was conducted in the smallholder dairy farms of Muktagacha Upazila, Mymensingh District. The course of the experiment was 60 days. Experimental animals and rations: In the study area all animals were stall fed along with limited grazing. The grazing areas were wastes land and roadsides. The basal ingredients, straw, cut grass, wheat bran, rice polish and mustard oil cake used as rations for each group of animals. The feeding and management conditions of all animals were almost indifferent. Collection and examination of faecal sample: At the beginning of the experiment, faeces from all animals were collected directly from the rectum or previously defecated ones, preserved and processed for performing the quantitative test for detecting the eggs, larvae and/or matured parasites in faeces. Selection and dosing of anthelmintic drugs:The commercially available anthelmintics were selected as per types of parasites and doses are maintained according to the pharmaceutical instructions. Determination of efficacy: The clinical history emphasizing the age of the animal, species of parasites affecting, type of anthelmintics dosing and marking of the animals were recorded in a record book. Following anthelmintics dosing, the faeces were again collected in a regular interval to reexamine for the detection of parasitic incidences in the treated animals and the results were analyzed and noted to determine the efficacy of specific anthelmintic. Data analysis: Collected data were tabulated and analysed by descriptive statistics such as average, percentages, etc.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that parasitic infestation rate is high in the study area and calves were higher infected. The rate in Holstein Friesian cross was higher than the other two breeds. Proper feeding and management system of all age group of dairy animal may reduce the parasitic infestation rates of them but further research on anthelmintics sensitivity test is needed before routine anthelmintics dosing.
