Feasibility of Growing Cabbage in Summer Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two heat tolerant varieties of cabbage namely K- Y cross and Fukamidori were planted on 18th February and 5th March, 1976. K- Y cross was found to be better than the other variety in respect of yield and earliness at both planting dates. Both these varieties gave higher yield when planted on 5th March as compared with 18th February, '76 planting.

Objectives:

To study the performance of two varieties planted at two different dates.

Methodology:

The trial was conducted at the vegetables farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Dhaka. Randomized block design with four replica tions was used in this trial. The size of the individual plot was 12' x 12'. Seeds of K-Y cross and Fukamidori were received from Takii & Co., Japan. One month old seedlings of these varieties were transplanted on 18th February and 5th March, 1976 at a spacing of 1' from plant to plant and 2' from row to row. Manures and fertilizers were applied at the rate of Cowdung 150 mds, mustard oil cake 2 mds, urea 2 mds, T.S.P. 1/2 md, and muriate of potash 1 md per acre. The entire amount of Cowdung and half of T.S.P. were applied during and preparation. The entire dose of mustard oil cake and half of T.S.P. were applied in the pits made for transplantation of seedlings. Urea and muriate of potash were side. dressed in two installments at an interval of fifteen days from the date of transplanting. Intercultural operations including irrigation were done as and when required. Data were recorded and analyzed statistically for the following characters:

a) Head weight, b) Days required for harvesting, c) Yield per acre. Some of the plants were damaged by soft rot disease caused by Erwinia carotovora but their number were unequal in different plots. The data on the yield per acre was therefore computed on the basis of harvested heads.

Achievement/Findings:

Preliminary observations indicate that it may be possible to grow cabbage during the summer season if the climate during the growing period is not unusually abnormal. The climate of the season in which the experiment was conducted was characterised by unusually high rainfall that occurred during the period of harvest . This resulted in an outbreak of soft rot disease which caused consider able damage to the crop before 10-15 days of harvesting. Otherwise the plants showed normal growth and head formation and the taste of cabbage as reported by several consumers, was acceptable. The yield of both the varieties appeared to be satisfactory as compared with the yield of cabbage grown during the winter season.

It appears from the results that cultivar K.Y cross is superior to Fukamidori in respect of both yield and earliness. The difference in yield between the two cultivars was statistically significant. As to the effect of time of planting, the 5th March planting resulted in significantly higher yield as compared to the 18th February planting. The reason of such variation is not clear, it may be related to some microclimatic factors. It is not possible to make any conclusive remarks about the prospect of growing cabbage during the summer season in Bangladesh on the basis of one experiment, but results of this experiment give hopeful indications. The major problem of cabbage cultivation during summer will be soft rot disease, the outbreak of which seems to be associated with continuous heavy rainfall.
