Effect of Abiotic Factors on Quality of Jute Seed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A laboratory experiment was conducted at the experimental lab of Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla agricultural university to determining the productivity of quality seed, its storage performed and type of container used during storage. The experiment was conducted during 23 July, 2009 to 20 August, 2009. Tin and polythene container were found less permeable to moisture transmission compared with gunny bag and tin container also retained higher seed quality attributes throughout the storage period. Moisture content of the seeds of gunny bag was found increased to 25.4% from initial moisture content 16.23%. Seed moisture content of tin pot and poly bag remained also increased. This increase of seed moisture content was closely related to room temperature and relative humidity. Germination percentage decrease rapidly from 60% to 0% in the seeds of gunny bag and from 64% to 27% in the seeds of poly bag contained high moisture content. But gradual decreasing of germination (From 82%, 78%, 78% and 77%) was observed in the seeds of tin pot and tin pot was found to best storage container to store jute seed for maintaining quality.

Objectives:

1. To determine the effect of different storage containers on retention of seed quality, 2. To determine the effect of seed moisture regime and their interaction with type of storage container on retention of seed quality over storage period, and 3. To determine performance of jute seeds under different storage conditions

Methodology:

Agronomy department of Sher-e- Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) supplied Jute seed which they are collected from siddique bazaar used in this experiment. Seeds were kept in three containers such as tin pot, poly bag and jute bag and stored at room temperature and RH for 2 months. First experiment was set on 23rd June, 2009. Tin pot, polythene bag (transparent) and jute bag containers used for Jute seed storage. During the storage period seeds samples were taken every week from the containers (tin, gunny bag and polythene) for determination of change of moisture content (Dry basis), germination percentage and presence of insect and fungal activity. Moisture content was determined by using grain moisture meter (Model no. 303 RS) in the Agronomy laboratory of SAU. Seeds from each 3 containers were taken and determine moisture. Germination test was conducted by following blotter method. As jute seed dose not have any dormancy period in its life cycle, it can germinate at any time after harvest if there is enough moisture. Germination tests were carried out in room condition. 25 seeds per petridish were equally distributed on the top of a 9 cm whatman filter paper moistened with distilled water in 8 replicates. Germination was recorded after 3 days and at 15 days interval. Reading of dry bulb and weight bulb temperature and relative humidity of inside the room was recorded in every 9 am and 6 pm a day.
