Some Aspects of Water Quality Parameters of the Mouri River, Khulna: an Attempt to Estimate Pollution Status

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Water quality focuses on the various aspects of the physico-chemical parameters of water by which state of the water body can easily be observed. Measurements of various water quality parameters play the key role in detecting the status of pollution and suitability of a particular water body for various aquatic organisms. The present study was conducted to measure the various physico-chemical parameters of the water of Mouri river, Khulna for a period of 6 months from February to July, 2009 in order to assess the status of pollution of the river. Various physical water quality parameters revealed that the mean values of water temperature, turbidity, TSS and TDS were 27.610C, 18.56 cm (secchi depth), 473.17 mg/L and 2560 mg/L respectively. Some aspects of the chemical parameters revealed that the mean ranges of pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), free CO₂, alkalinity, acidity, hardness, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrite nitrogen were 5.5-9, 0.4-8.2 mg/L, 21-35.5 mg/L, 350-610 mg/L, 32.4-171.23 mg/L, 310-510 mg/L, 23-42.35 mg/L, 290-406 mg/L and 0.54-1.88 mg/L respectively. All the measured water quality parameters showed a greater deviation from the standard parameters and the water of the river is not suitable for most of the aquatic organisms. This river acts as the main dumping site of Khulna city that is leading the river towards environmentally degraded condition. Hence it has become an imperative to take all necessary steps to reduce the status of pollution of this river.

Objectives:

1. The objective of the present study was to determine the major physicochemical parameters of the Mouri river to assess the status of pollution of this river.

Methodology:

Selection of the study area - Six different stations were selected at 1.5 Km interval. The stations were Rayar Mohal (Station-I), Shashanghat (Station-II), Gollamari bridge (Station-III), near Moulovir Dargah (station-IV), Nirala grave yard (Station-V) and Ten gate (Station-VI). Sample collection - Samples were collected from six different stations at morning (8-9 am). Water samples were kept and preserved in 250 ml plastic and glass bottles after collection. Samples were collected and analyzed for a period of 6 months from February to July. Analysis of various water quality parameters - The measured and analyzed water quality parameters involved both the physical and chemical parameters. Physical parameters are: temperature, turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS). Chemical parameters involved: pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), free CO₂, alkalinity, acidity, hardness, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nitrite nitrogen. All the required water quality parameters were measured.
