Effect of Abiotic and Biotic Factors on the Seed Quality of Deshi Jute (corchorus Capsularis)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at the Plant Pathology Laboratory of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during 18 April to 18 July, 2010 to observe the effect of different storage container on the seed quality of deshi jute (Corchorus capsularis). There were three types of Storage material (Metallic container, Poly bag and Gunny bag) and four types of storage period (15, 30, 45 and 60 days) for evaluation used in the experiment. The experiment was laid out by Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications. The seeds stored in gunny bag always retained the highest moisture content 11.10, 11.80, 12.25 and 12.95% at 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after storing. The seeds of metallic container showed highest germination (70-81%), whereas, the lowest germination was found in gunny bag (52.25-65.55%). The metallic container produced the highest number of normal seedling whereas seeds of gunny bags experienced the highest number of abnormal seedlings. The highest number dead seed 6, 7, 10 and 13 was found in gunny bag after intervals of storing. The weight of 1000 seed increased in gunny bag compared to poly bag and metallic container due to gaseous exchange between seed and environment.

Objectives:

1. To observe the effect of different storage container on the seed quality of deshi jute (Corchorus capsularis).

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Plant Pathology Laboratory of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during 18 April to 18 July, 2010. The experimental treatment includes three types of storage material (Metallic container, Poly bag and Gunny bag) and four types of storage period (15, 30, 45 and 60 days). The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications. Seeds were kept in three containers such as metallic container, Poly bag and Gunny bag. The seeds were stored at room temperature and relative humidity during evaluation period. Moisture content of seeds was measured by using high constant temperature oven method following International Rules of Seed Testing (Anonymous, 1999). On the other hand, germination test was done in petridish at the glass house. Blotter paper was used as germination media which was collected and dipping with some moisture. Adequate moisture level was maintained in the germination media. A seed is considered to be germinated as seed coat ruptured; plumule and radicals come out up to 5 mm in length. Germination percentage was calculated using the formula- Germination (%) = Number of seeds germinated/ Number of seeds tested x 100. Normal and abnormal seeds were classified according to the rules of ISTA. The recorded and calculated data were statistically analyzed using a MSTAT-C Statistical Computer Package Programme in accordance with the principles of Completely Randomized Design, Duncun’s Multiple Range test (DMRT) was performed to compare variations among treatments.

Achievement/Findings:

Improved indoor container like metallic container gave quality seeds rather than gunny bag and poly bag during storage period. Gunny bag is not safe for jute seed storage for long time than metallic container and poly bag due to the rate of moisture absorbance was higher in gunny bag than metallic container.
