Screening of Soyabean Varieties for Viability Under Laboratory Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A varietal screening trial on the basis of seed viability with 74 varieties of soybean was conducted covering a period up to 321 days after harvest. The results showed that five varieties gave germination percentages ranging between 75 and 90 when stored for 278 to 321 days with average of 80% and 300 days. The varieties are Pureline-1039, Taichung-4, SRF-150, AVRDC-30037-2 and Biloxi. The variety Pureline-1039 was found to maintain the highest germination record starting from the first to the last test in which the average percentage of germination was 96.33 for an average storage period of 210 days. It was noted that the material AVRDC-30037-2 showed a significant difference from general pattern of deterioration due to long storage. This material during the first test after 155 days, gave only 40% germination; while the percentage increased to 75 after 264 days and maintained the same rate up to 311 days.

Objectives:

To identify Soyabean Varieties for Viability under Laboratory Condition

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Bangladesh Coordinated Soybean Research Project, Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with 74 varieties/lines after the harvest of the 1977 kharif crop. All the materials were not harvested and stored at the same time. After harvest and subsequent threshing and drying of seeds of each lines/varieties 100 seeds of each material were stored in sealed polytheline bag for the purpose. All the sealed bags were kept in normal tern in laboratory. Three germination tests were performed after different time of storage, and after each test. use, the polytheline bags were resealed. First and second germination tests were done after 122 to 165 and 231 to 274 days of storage. In both the tests 20 seeds of each material were used for germination in petridish using blotting papers and water in normal laboratory condition. But the third germination test was done in soil in the laboratory with the same number of seeds to obtain the emergence after 278 to 321 days of storage. The values of regression coefficient ("b") were estimated for each test, group and irrespective of group and test. From the beginning of harvesting date the varieties harvested within a period of 10 days were kept in a group. Thus, there were 5 groups for each test.

The variety Puretine-1039 was found to maintain the highest germination record starting from the first to the last test in which the average percentage of germination was 96.33 for an average storage period of 210 days. It was noted that the material AVRDC-30037-2 showed a significant difference from general pattern of deterioration due to long storage. This material during the first test after 155 days, gave only 40% germination; while the percentage increased to 75 after 264 days and maintained the same rate up to 311 days. The results of this experiment showed that the possibility of selecting varieties for high seed viability is quite strong.
