Characterization of Some Advanced Breeding Lines Against Salinity Stress at Reproductive Stages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Study on salt stress is considered as for increasing rice production in saline area. Attempts were made to develop suitable salt tolerant variety through various biotechnological methods. Seven advanced breeding lines which were selected for salt tolerance at seedling stage along with two checks, namely, Pokkali (tolerant) and IR29 (sensitive) were evaluated. Data on shoot weight reduction (%) and grain yield reduction (%) were recorded. 25 days old seedlings were transplanted in Yoshida’s culture solution. At reduction division stage, NaCl was added to maintain the EC at 4 and 6 dsm^-1. The salinity level was recorded daily and maintained upto maturity. The yield of all the genotypes was reduced significantly with increase of salinity level. Accordingly the shoot weight was also reduced with the increase of salinity level. The least yield reduction was found in Pokkali (2.4 and 17.2% at 4 and 6 dsm^-2) followed by BR7084-310-AC2-7 (24.54, 43.77) and BR7084-310-AC2-2 (11.22, 51.40) genotypes. The performance of BR7084-310-AC3-1 was substantially good upto 4 dsm^-1 but the yield reduced drastically at 6 dsm^-1. Performance of other genotypes regarding the shoot and yield reduction due to salinity was not satisfactory. Three breeding lines performed better in respect to grain yield.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Seven advanced breeding lines which were selected for salt tolerance at seedling stage along with two checks, namely, Pokkali (tolerant) and IR29 (sensitive) were evaluated. The entries were grown in two sets. Data on shoot weight reduction (%) and grain yield reduction (%) were recorded. The seedlings were grown in culture solution and 25 days old seedlings were transplanted in plastic bucket containing Yoshida’s culture solution. The P^H of the culture solution was checked daily and maintained at 5. At reduction division stage, NaCl was added in the culture solution to maintain the EC at 4 and 6 dsm^-1. The salinity level was recorded daily and maintained upto maturity. One set was grown as control.
