Comparative Vegetational Analysis of Different Plant Communities of the Jahangirnagar University Campus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A vegetational survey was carried out in four habitats of Jahangirnagar University campus by random quadrat method. These four habitats were recognized as woodland, open scrub, grassland and rice field communities. Among these four plant communities 198 plant species were recorded which belonged to 143 genera and 58 families. The woodland community was more diverse than other habitats and the phanerophytic life-form dominated the campus vegetation. The life-form spectra indicate that the vegetation of the study area is of tropical in nature. Physico-chemical properties of soil were silty clay to clayey and acidic in nature. The plant diversity of different habitats is now being depleted by different anthropogenic activities.

Objectives:

To record and evaluate the present status of the plant diversity and their habitat conditions of different habitats of the study area.

Methodology:

Selection of the sites was the first step of field investigation. Field observation was made in the different selected sites, which were selected on the basis of the vegetational type. The selected sites were woodland, open scrub, grassland, and rice field vegetation. The woodland community was dominated by the cultivated tree species, like Mangifera indica, Artocarpus heterophyllus, Acacia auriculiformis etc., but the open scrub was represented by shrubby and under-shrubby species. On the other hand, the grassland community was dominated by the grass species, like Axonopus compressus, Cynodon dactylon, Echinochloa cruss-guli, Panicum repens etc. and sedges, mostly by the Cyperus and Fimbristylis genus, while, rice field community dominated by different weeds which are associated with rice cultivation. The permanent stand of 40×20m sampling area was taken arbitrarily for all types of vegetation, and studied throughout the year. In each permanent stand of the sampling area, ten quadrats were made randomly. In each quadrat of the sampling area, the quadrat size was determined as 2×2m, but 1×1m was made for grassland vegetation. The number and size of the quadrat were determined on the basis of species area curve. The phytosociological data were recorded from permanent stands during October, January, April, and July for the purpose of the comparative vegetational analysis. The quantitative phytosociological attributes, e.g. density (D₁), relative density (D₃), frequency (F₁) and relative frequency (F₃) were determined. Thirty two soil samples were collected randomly from eight stands of four recognized sites and prepared for physico-chemical analysis. Out of them four samples were collected from each stand with two different places and two depths as top soil from 0-25 cm and sub soil from 26-50 cm. The physical properties, like moisture and textural classes were determined by Gravimetric method and hydrometer method, respectively. The chemical properties such as pH of moist soil with the soil to water ratio 1:2.5 was determined electrochemically. pH meter, organic carbon content was also determined. Available phosphorus was extracted by Bay and Kurtz method and phosphorus present in the extract was estimated by ascorbic acid blue colour method. Available potassium was extracted by neutral IN NH₄OAc method.

Achievement/Findings:

A wide range of floristic composition at Jahangirnagar University campus, especially woodland community plays an important role on environmental conservation and also influences the microclimate, but the plant resources of the study area are slowly and quietly being depleted by several factors. As a result, the vegetation is converted into scrub or thorny forbs. Therefore, there is immediate need to protect these ecologically important habitats for future sustainable environment of this area.
