Studies on the Variability of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To compare the performance of a genotype under one agro-climatic conditions, seven varieties of Soybeans, namely Bragg, Bossier, Pickett-71, Semmes, Lee-74, Hood- 75 and Davis were collected from three different places of Bangladesh and were grown in the experimental plot of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.The results indicated that the seed sources produce statistically significant varietal difference in respect of (a) the time required by individual varieties to be ready for harvest (b) pod-setting height (c) seed weight. No significant difference was observed in respect of the time taken by individual variety to 50% flowering and yield, the later character being dependent upon the variety used, location and its field emergence.

Objectives:

To the study in providing information about the range of variation within a genotype

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh during January to June,1978. The experimental materials included seven varieties of soybeans seeds which were collected from 3 different locations. The seven varieties of soybeans were: Bossier,Bragg,Davis, Hood-75, Lee-74, Pickett-71 and Semmes, collected from two stations, Joydebpur and Hathazari of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute and one from the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BAU, Mymensingh, where those were maintained in genetically pure condition. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. Each individual block was divided into three main plots in each of which the seven varieties collected from each of the 3 station were randomly distributed. The seeds were treated with Granosan-M and inoculated with soybean inoculant (Nitragin) @ 10g/kg of seeds prior to sowing, The seeds were sown at a depth of 4 cm . The row to row distance was 30 cm and plant to plant distance was 5 cm. Intercultural operations were done regularly depending upon the field conditions and irrigation was applied whenever it was necessary. All the characters were classified into three groups for this purpose. In the first group of characters termed pi ant characters included: (a) No, of days required to reach 50% flowering, (b) pod-setting height, (c) pod-setting length, (d) plant height and (e) days to maturity. In the second group of characters termed seed characters, the following were included: (f) number of pods per plant, (g) number of seeds per plant, (h) weight of seeds per plant and (i) 100 seed weight. In the third group of characters the following were included: (i) plant stand and (k) yield per plot. The grade points were given on the basis of its performance, the most desired type being graded 1, followed in each case by increased serial number (up to 7), corresponding to less and less desired type in each case. A few of the important characters have been studied and reported in this paper. The error variance (8²e), variance for interaction between varieties and sources of seeds (8²i) and genotypic variance (8²g) were calculated by appropriate analysis of variance.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that varieties, Davis, Hood-75 and Lee-74 secured top three positions in respect of plant characters. When seed characters were considered, the position changed i. e., the variety Bossier ranked first and was followed by Lee-74. Considering these two groups of characters together the most favorite variety, was Davis followed by Lee-74 and Hood-75. The performance of others were distinctly separated. But when plant stand and yield were taken as a criteria to the performance, Bragg was adjudged the best variety and this was followed by Semmes and Pickett-71. When all the three groups of characters were considered together, the variety Davis topped the list and was followed by Lee-74 and Bragg.
