The study was initiated at BRRI farm Gazipur in T. Aman 2002 and Boro 2002-03 to evaluate the variation in N uptake and utilization by 10 genotypes with split plot design.  In T. Aman season, BR11, BRRI Dhan37, BRRI Dhan39, and 7 advance lines (IR65610-38-2-4-2-6-3, BR6004-75-4-H7, BR5996-29-2-4-1, BR5999-82-3-2HR1, BR6390-24-1-6, BR6415-2-3-1, and BR6420-11-2-1 ) were tested under two levels of N-control  and 60 kg N/ha. In the Boro, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29,  and eight lines (BR4828-54-4-1-4-9, BR4839-17-5-2-2-HR5, BR6144-36-5-2, NR11, BR6209-16-3,SI-PI-6920-33, BR802-78-2-1, and BR4828-2-21) were tested with two N fertilizer doses, N-control and N 130 kg/ha. The highest grain yield of 4.19 t/ha was obtained with BR5996-29-2-4-1 and lowest yield of 2.87 t/ha was obtained with BRRI dhan37.The N requirement to produce 1 ton grain yield for BR6420-11-2-1 was 23.28 kg/ton. The lowest N use efficiency was observed in IR6510-38-2-4-2-6-3, BR6004-75-4-H7 and BR5999-82-3-2-HR1, respectively. In the Boro season, the highest grain yield of 5.40 t/ha was obtained with BR4839-17-5-2-2-HR5 and the grain yields in BRRI dhan29, BR4828-54-4-1-4-9 and BR802-78-2-1 was statistically similar to that of BR4839-17-5-2-2-HR5. The variation in yield of the tested genotypes from the control plot implies that the rice genotypes were different in ability to utilize native soil N.

To evaluate the variation in N uptake and utilization by 10 genotypes (varieties and some advanced lines)  in Boro and T. Aman seasons.

The study was initiated at BRRI farm Gazipur on Chhiata clay loam soil (hyperthermic Vertic Endoaquept) in T. Aman 2002 with three varieties BR11, BRRI Dhan37, BRRI Dhan39, and 7 advance lines (IR65610-38-2-4-2-6-3, BR6004-75-4-H7, BR5996-29-2-4-1, BR5999-82-3-2HR1, BR6390-24-1-6, BR6415-2-3-1, and BR6420-11-2-1 ) were tested under two levels of N-control (N0) and 60 kg N/ha (N60) in split plot design in 3 replications. Fertilizer doses were assigned in main plot and varieties in sub-plot. The soil of the experimental field was clay loam in texture having pH 5.6, organic matter 1.40%, total N content 0.10%, available P, 13 ppm, exchangeable K 0.23 meq/100g soil, available S, 20 ppm and available Zn, 5 ppm. In T. Aman, a flat dose of PKS (kg/ha) @ 7-25-10 were applied as STB. In the Boro 2002-03, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29,  and eight lines (BR4828-54-4-1-4-9, BR4839-17-5-2-2-HR5, BR6144-36-5-2, NR11, BR6209-16-3,SI-PI-6920-33, BR802-78-2-1, and BR4828-2-21) were tested with two N fertilizer doses, N-control and N 130 kg/ha. Urea was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from 5 m2 area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.

In T. Aman, the amount of N required to produce 1 t of grain under N control condition varied from 14.76 to 22.15 kg, but under N applied condition this amount varied from 18.06-23.28 kg/ton. The variation in yield of the tested genotypes from the control plot implies that the rice genotypes were different in ability to utilize native soil N.
