Determination of the Smallest Plot Size for Estimating Plant Characters and Yield of Transplanted Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Quality of the field experiments data dependent upon adequate experimental design. This study investigated the smallest plot size for estimating different plant characters and yield of transplanted rice. The experiment was conducted in Boro 2000-01 and Boro 2001-02 as two-factor factorial experiment in a randomized complete block (RCB) design with three replications. Factor1 is the plot size with three levels: 1-x1-m, 2-x2-m and 3-x3-m and factor2 is the cultural management. BRRI dhan29 with spacing 20-x20-cm was cultivated and plant height, tiller number, panicle length, numbers of filled and unfilled grain, spikelet/panicle, 1000-grain weight and yield data were collected. Results seem to indicate that for field experiments with rice, the experimental plots may be made as small as 1-x1-m for estimating the plant characters except yield. If yield is of primary importance, the plot size should not be smaller than 4m².

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to determine the smallest plot size for estimating different plant characters and yield of transplanted rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in Boro 2000-01 and Boro 2001-02 as two-factor factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In Boro 2001-02, experiment was conducted only for the confirmation of yield result of Boro 2000-01. Factor 1 is the plot size (harvest area) with three levels: 1-x1-m, 2-x2-m and 3-x3-m and factor 2 is the cultural management with two levels: method 1 and method 2. Method 1 is the conventional method where all cultural operations such as weeding, fertilizer and insecticide applications were performed entered into the plots and in method 2, all those cultural operations were performed from bamboo poles placed over the plots to avoid possible damage or physical shocks to plants due to foot pressing. All these operations were done very carefully such that every portion of each plot could receive uniform treatment. The variety was BRRI dhan29 and spacing was 20-x20-cm. Each plot had two extra rows of plants as boarders. Plant height, tiller number, panicle length, numbers of filled and unfilled grain, spikelet/panicle, 1000-grain weight and yield data were collected.

Achievement/Findings:

None of the plot size, management method or their interaction was significant for any of the plant characters indicating that all of the plant characters, viz., plant height, tiller number, panicle length, number of filled and unfilled grains per hill, number of spikelets/panicle, 1000-grain weight and plot yield remained almost unaffected by plot size and management methods. However, relatively high CV of yield posed a question on the precision of the estimate of yield. But from the result of Boro 2001-02, for estimating yield plot size may be small upto 2-x2-m. A closer look at the range of yield showed that irrespective of method, variability in yield was the highest for the smallest plot i.e., precision of yield estimate increases with increase of plot size and yield estimate is likely to be more precise in method 2 than in method 1. Plot 2-x2-m appears to be reasonably small for estimating yield. Results seem to indicate that for field experiments with rice, the experimental plots may be made as small as 1-x1-m for estimating the plant characters except yield and for yield plot size (harvest area) should not be smaller than 4m².
