Gis-technique for Selection of Rice Varieties in Boro Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted to identify and delineate the geographical areas suitable for rice genotypes- BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI Hybriddhan1 during the Boro season 2003. Maps of suitable areas have been produced for growing those varieties. The southwestern and northern parts of Bangladesh appeared to be equally suitable for cultivation of all the tested varieties. All those varieties gave higher grain yield in medium high and medium low lands having clay to loamy textured soil. The most suitable areas have been estimated as 49, 64, 47 and 25% of total Boro areas for BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI Hybriddhan1 respectively.

Objectives:

To construct maps of suitable areas have been produced for growing the varieties BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI Hybriddhan1.

Methodology:

The study was carried out in the location where 110 trial plots were established in 30 sites of 29 upazila in Bangladesh in the Boro 2003 season with three inbred and one hybrid rice varieties- BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI Hybriddhan1 were grown under the Seed Production and Distribution Program (SPDP). The coordinate values of the trial plots were recorded using Global Positioning System (GPS) during June-August, 2003. The soil physical properties considered in this study were land type, soil permeability, slope, soil salinity and topsoil texture from soil database of BCA. The characterization tool of AWhere ACT software (Mudspring, 2002) of BCA was first used for identification of soil parameters of high, medium and low yield locations for all the tested genotypes. The yield of each variety/line greater than the experimental yield (Adhunik Dhaner Chach, 2003) was designated as high yield. The medium yield was defined as the yield 1t/ha less than the high yield and low yield 1 t/ha less than the medium yield. For each variety, all values of a particular soil parameter at high yield locations formed the class of values for that parameter for high yield of that variety. Similar approach was followed to determine the class of values of other soil parameters. The same procedure was used to determine the class of values of soil parameters for medium and low yield of the variety. The AEZ (BARC, 2001) database of BCA version 1.0 was used for classification. All trial plots were in non-saline areas, and hence salinity was not considered in the characterization. Again, the trial plots were located in plain lands and hence the value of slope was assigned as the lowest value i.e. < 3% of soil map. The soil parameter values considered for suitability of different genotypes are listed in tables 1-4 which are constructed based on the soil and land properties of the demonstrated plots determined from the Agro Ecological Zones (AEZ). This study was determined by only soil and land properties. The characteristics tool of AWhere ACT was used to produce maps showing suitable (high yield), moderately suitable (medium yield) and less suitable (low yield) areas for each variety.

The southwestern and northern parts of the country appeared to be equally suitable for cultivation of all the tested varieties and the advance line. All tested genotypes gave higher grain yield in medium high and medium low lands having clay to loamy textured soil mostly in medium high to medium low land with slow to moderately rapid permeability. The most suitable areas have been estimated as 49, 64 and 47% of total Boro areas for BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36 respectively. About 25% of total Boro area is suitable for BRRI Hybriddhan1.
