Extrapolation of Domain of a Proven Resource Conservation Technology - Crop Establishment by Chinese Hand Tractor Seeder in Rice-wheat Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Extrapolation of domain of crop establishment by Chinese Hand Tractor (CHT) seeder, a resource conservation technology in rice-wheat systems has been made using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. Eight soil physical parameters namely, land type, slope, top soil texture, soil moisture, permeability, drainage, soil depth and soil consistency were considered for suitability of wheat crop establishment by CHT. Gerater Jessore, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Rajshahi, Natore, Bogra, Dinajpur, Rangpur, Comilla and Noakhali districts and very small area in Cox’s Bazar district found suitable for establishing wheat crop by CHT. Most of Bangladesh soils are moderately suitable. A gross area of suitable and moderately suitable for tilling the land with CHT was estimated as 2.17 (15%) and 7.46 (50%) million hectares, respectively.

Objectives:

An attempt has been made to extrapolate the domains of CHT for establishment of wheat crop in Bangladesh based on the research findings at Chuadanga district.

Methodology:

Based on the Chuadanga study, suitability of CHT for wheat seeding, eight soil physical parameters namely, land type, slope, topsoil texture, soil moisture, permeability, drainage, soil depth and consistency were considered. The suitability scales 1 to 3 with 1 representing the most suitable and 3 not suitable was assigned to each soil characteristic in relation to the easiness in tilling the soil by CHT and suitability of the land for growing wheat. These scales were derived through consultation with the scientists working with the machine in rice-wheat research site in Chudanga.. The suitability classification of the areas for wheat crop establishment using CHT was generated in several steps.

Step 1. All the eight soil parameters were laid as input vector themes for the model and were converted to grid themes for analysis in the Model Builder environment using ArcView 3.2 Spatial Analyst module (ESRI 2000).

Step 2. A slope grid is derived from the elevation grid. In the third phase of the model, the values in the slope grid are reclassified.

Step 3. All grids become the inputs to the final suitability grid. The weighted overlay function rated the values in each input grid on a numeric preference scale and assigned scale value according to individual suitability class and then weighted the relative influence of the grids relative to one another. In the weighted overlay table, the “percent influence field” was used to assign the influence of each theme on the suitability assessment. The relative influence of each soil physical property to the easiness of operation of CHT was also derived in consultation with the researchers who rated topsoil texture as the highest (30%), and effective soil depth as the lowest (1%).

Suitable values are assigned in each parameter classes to the easiness of operation of CHT. In Table 1, MH2 and MLL areas are suitable for CHT. Slope less than 3% is suitable for CHT. The suitable areas for establishing wheat crop by CHT are located in the western and northwestern part of the country (Gerater Jessore, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Rajshahi, Natore, Bogra, Dinajpur and Rangpur districts) and in Comilla and Noakhali regions and very small area in Cox’s Bazar. Most of Bangladesh soils are moderately suitable.
