Study of the Present Status of Endangered Small Indigenous Species (sis) of Fish in the Natural Waters of the North-west Part of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results of the study revealed that the availability of small indigenous species (SIS) of fish declined to a great extent over the years and many of them were either rare or at the verge of extinction. Some rivers of Dinajpur dist rict are well connected with Indian rivers. That causes the SIS of fish diversity in the natural waters of the North-west part of Bangladesh comparatively rich. On the other hand, most of the beels of Dinajpur are seasonal and bearing only names but no water present in the dry season. Anyway, the most significant message is that some vulnerable and endangered SIS of fish are abundantly found in the natural water bodies of Dinajpur such as: Juary (Joya), Khorki (Tila Koksha), Bhagna, Bata, Bhangan bata, Gutum, Balichata gutum etc. So, it is very essential to take all the necessary actions to protect and conserve them for their common availability and sustenance throughout the country including the North-west part of Bangladesh.

Objectives:

1. To know the biodiversity of SIS of fish in the natural waters of North-west region of Bangladesh; and 2. To know the present status of endangered SIS of fish in the natural waters of North-west part of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during August to November, 2008 in various natural water bodies such as rivers, beels etc. of the North-west part of Bangladersh especially in Dinajpur district. Required data were collected weekly about available small indigenous species of fish (SIS) from the important rivers and beels of Dinajpur district. During data collection, needed information were recorded from the fishermen and villagers and available SIS of fish samples was bought for preservation purpose. Experimental natural waterbodies. Required data about small indigenous species of fish (SIS) were collected from important natural waterbodies of the Dinajpur district from August to November, 2008 (for 16 weeks).

Achievement/Findings:

Small indigenous species (SIS) of fish are the blessing of nature for providing food and nutrition especially for very rich in vitamin - A, calcium and other micro nutrients and also for their subsistence and supplement income to the majority of the country people. SIS of fish are often eater whole and contribute a large amount of micro nutrients and minerals to the diet. One can purchase very small quantities of SIS of fish and is therefore more easily accessible to the rural people. These SIS of fish are the main, indeed the only source of animal protein and most of the fat soluble vitamins for the rural people who represent more than 80% of total country population.
