Sustainable and Environmentally FRIendly Management of Stem Rot of Sesame

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken to assess different integrated disease management components individually or in combination suitable for controlling stem rot (Macrophomina phaseolina) of sesame (clean seed of Binatill-1) under inoculated condition in the field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) farm, Mymensingh, during the period of March to June. All the single or combined application of treatments showed considerably positive effect in controlling stem rot and increasing seed yield over control. However, the lowest disease incidence, lesion length and the highest yield and yield contributing characters were obtained in combined application of Mustard oil cake, Dithane M-45 and T. harzianum than the other treatments. An average of 55 to 82.5% disease reduction and 25.5 to 86.3 % yield increased were recorded in plants treated with the single or combined doses of treatments over control.

Objectives:

1. To develop an integrated package of technology for the management of stem rot disease of sesame with ecologically and environmentally sustainable manner.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in the field of BINA farm, Mymensingh with eight treatments viz; T₁ = Control ( Inoculated), T₂ = Bavistin 1g/l (Three times), T₃ = .Mustard oil cake (MOC) 250 gm/l, T₄ = Trichoderma harzianum @ 45kg/ha pulsebran culture , T₅ = Bavistin + MOC, T₆ = Dithane M-45@ 2 gm/l, T₇ = Trichoderma harzianum + MOC and T₈ = T. harzianum + MOC + Dithane M- 45.Each treatments was replicated three times in randomized complete block design with plot size 3m×1.5m and line to line spacing 30cm and plant to plant spacing 10cm.Mustard oil cake powder was applied 15cm upper to the soil 3 days before seed sowing and mixed well to obtain uniform suspension. T. harzianum was applied to the furrow 72 hrs before seed sowing. Bavistin and Dithane M-45 were applied. Bavistin was applied to each furrow with the help of knapsack sprayer 24 hrs before seed sowing. Fifteen plants from each plot were inoculated with 7 days old culture of M. Phaseolina about 15 cm upper to the soil level. Recommended doses of Urea, Triple Super Phosphate (TSP), Muriate of Potash and Zinc sulphate were applied to the soil during land preparation. Data were collected on disease incidence (%), lesion length (mm), no. of leaf/plant, leaf area index, plant height, no. of capsule /plant and grain yield/plot. The severity of stem rot was measured as lesion length developed on the inoculated sites 45 days after inoculation.
