Use of Organic Manure: Farmers’ Awareness and Environmental Consideration

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in three villages of Chauhali upazila under Sirajganj district during the period of first April to mid May 2008 to observe the knowledge of farmers about using the organic manure and also to determine the relationships between selected characteristics of the farmers towards the use of the organic manure. The selected characteristics of the farmers namely age, education family size, annual income and knowledge of organic manure constituted independent variables while attitude towards the use of organic manure was the dependent variable of this study. A total of 50 farmers constituted the sample for this study. The total sample divided into four categories like landless, small, medium and large. The information was collected through personal interview from the individual respondent at their home. To describe the selected characteristics of farmers, the descriptive statistics like number, per centage, range, mean and standard deviation was computed. Finally to explore the relationships among the variables concerned, Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was computed. Five per cent (0.05) level of probability was employed in order to accept or reject the null hypotheses. Fifty per cent of the farmers had medium knowledge while 24% had low knowledge and 26% had high knowledge about using the organic manure. Seventy eight per cent of the farmers used both chemical fertilizer and organic manure while 18% used only chemical fertilizer and 4% used only organic manure for their land cultivation. Eight per cent of the farmers highly used, while 40% moderately used, 34% slightly used and 18% did not use the organic manure. The correlation test showed that education, communication exposure, annual income and knowledge of organic manure had significant relationship while age, farm size, family size of the farmers had no significant relationship with the use of organic manure in this study area.

Objectives:

1. To explore the awareness of farmers about the use of organic manure and 2. To determine the relationship between the selected characteristics of the farmers and the use of organic manure.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the villages of Baghutia, Chowbaria and Charsalimabad in Chauhali upazila under Sirajganj district. Out of 1351 farmers, 50 farmers were selected for the study. The average age of the farmers was 39.98. Most (46%) of the farmers fell in the middle aged group while 38% and 16% fell in the young and old aged group respectively.In order to collect the required information on various aspects of the study, an interview schedule was carefully prepared to satisfy the objectives of the research. Direct questions and different scales were used to obtained reliable information. The researcher collected information through personal interview from the individual respondent at their home. The hypotheses of present research constituted two important elements viz. independent variables and a dependent variable. Eight variables were selected of which seven were selected as independent variables and one was selected as dependent variable. Independent variables are age, education, family size, farm size, annual income, communication exposure and knowledge on organic manure and dependent variable is use of organic manure: farmers’ awareness and environmental consideration. For this study, the analysis was performed by using statistical treatment with SPPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) computer package. To describe the selected characteristics of farmers, the descriptive statistics like number, percentage, range, mean and standard deviation were computed. To explore the relationship among the variables concerned, Pearson’s Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was computed. Five per cent (0.05) level of probability was employed in order to accept or reject the null hypotheses. A null hypothesis was rejected when the observed ‘r’ value was greater than the tabulated ‘r’ value at 0.05 level of probability and accepted when the observed ‘r’ value was smaller than the tabulated ‘r’ value at 0.05 level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

From the findings of the study, it may be concluded that any attempt to raise the literacy level of the respondent would be helpful to increase their use of organic manure. It can also be concluded that steps should be taken to pay more attention towards the poor respondents to raise their income so that they become aware of environmentally safe cultivation techniques along with high income respondents.
