Gene Pyramiding for Resistance to Bacterial Blight (bb)(2009-10)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Among the various factors limiting rice production, biotic stresses, which include diseases, are top in the list. Considering the resurgence of diseases against chemical pesticides, and the long-term impact of the pesticide residues in soil and crop produce, there is an urgent need to look for better options. Deployment of cultivars possessing one or more disease resistance genes is an economically feasible and environmentally sound option. The existence and emergence of new pathotypes has resulted in break down of resistance in varieties possessing single resistance genes. Pyramiding of several resistance genes in a single genetic background can achieve durable resistance. Therefore, a study was undertaken to pyramid two genes conferring bacterial blight resistance in the background of elite rice cultivars for developing high yielding cultivars with resistance /higher levels of tolerance to bacterial blight that limit the rice production in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To develop breeding lines possessing two resistance genes for BB

Methodology:

BR11, BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were used as a recipient plant in this study. On the other hand, IRBB60 having BB resistant genes viz. Xa13 and Xa21 were used as donor grown in the net house for three sets of plants were with an interval of 10 days to synchronize flowering. Thirty five days old single seedlings were transplanted in a 3.0 m × 2 row plot with 25 × 15 cm spacing. Fertilizers dose was 80:60:40 kg/ha NPK. Total amount of P and K fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen fertilizer was applied in three splits @ (40+20+20) at 15, 30, 50 days after transplanting. Usual method of emasculation and pollination were done. At maturity, F1 seeds were dried and stored in paper bags with proper labeling.

In T. Aman/2009 one back cross and Boro/ 2009-10 two back crosses were made and numbers of BC1F1(1917) and BC2F2(144) seeds obtained per back cross.
