An Investigation on Surface and Ground Water Quality of Jahangirnagar University Campus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was performed for assessing and evaluating of surface and ground water quality of Jahangirnagar University Campus of Savar, Dhaka. Most of the determining parameters of both surface and ground water of the campus were found near to the standard value. Temperature, total dissolved solid (TDS), electric conductivity (EC), pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total hardness were 28.50°C, 440.00 mg/L, 1.10 mS/cm, 7.66, 4.80 mg/L, 4.2 mg/L and 175 ppm respectively. Dissolved oxygen (DO) of the water body was quite sufficient for proper growth and development of aquatic species. The average concentration of DO of the surface water fluctuated from 4.14 to 5.37 mg/L and ground water varied from 4.02 to 4.17mg/L. The water bodies showed moderate BOD value from 4.01 to 4.20 mg/L. The content of EC, TSS, DO, hardness and BOD of water not exceeded the permissible limit of the standard of Department of Environment, Bangladesh 1997. There were no wide variations in pH values in the investigated water bodies. The overall study states that, the quality of drinking water is good enough to maintain public health and the surface lake water is superbly balance the ecosystem by ensuring greatest water quality.

Objectives:

1. To determine the quality of the water resources to make decisions on whether a water body is supporting or not supporting its designated uses such as aquatic life support, water contact recreation, fish, and drinking water.

Methodology:

Water samples were collected from different lakes of ten different locations of Jahangirnagar University campus during April, 2008. All the samples were collected in bottles separately, which were thoroughly washed with dilute acid and finally rinsed with distilled deionized water before sampling. Only for BOD, water samples were collected in BOD bottles of 300ml capacity. The water quality parameters- pH, dissolve oxygen (DO), total dissolved solid (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC) were determined in the spot and within one hour of sampling by respective digital meter. Aeration during sampling was avoided as far as possible. To prevent the precipitation 10 drops of 2M HNO₃ was added to the samples. The samples were immediately carried to the Environmental Science laboratory of Jahangirnagar University & analyzed with in an hour of collection or storage at 4 ⁰C.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above observation it can be concluded that drinking water quality in Jahangirnagar University campus at the point of its origin (DTW) is excellent, as they are free from both chemical and biological pollutants. But water at the consumer taps is slightly polluted. This is in agreement with the finding of some recent reports on suffering from water borne diseases of students of different halls are reflected in the chemical & biological pollutant analysis report. Finally, the surface and ground water quality of Jahangirnagar University Campus is not far away from the standard of Department of Environment (DOE), Bangladesh 1997. Further research should be conducted to determine the quality of water of Jahagirnagar University at regular interval to ensure the water quality.
