Microbial Population on the Decomposing Rice Straw in the Soil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Isolations of the micro-organisms were made on nine different dates from the decomposing rice straw in the soil in 10 months. The number of Actinomycetes, Bacteria and Fungi varied from 0 to 1.00.000; 5.66.666 to 10,76.666 and 1.16.666 to 11,66.666. respectively, during the course of decomposition. The maximum population of Actinomycetes and Bacteria was found in summer while that of the Fungi in the rainy Season.

Objectives:

To investigate whether there was any quantitative variation of the microbial population in the soil during the decomposition of rice straw.

Methodology:

Rice straw was collected from Munshigonj, Dhaka and was allowed to decompose in the soil at 3 different depths in the Botanical Garden, University of Dhaka in natural condition on 28.3.70. In 10 months, 9 isolations from the decomposing rice straw, taking each time one gram of the soil with decomposing rice straw, were made at different intervals of 15 days to 2 months depending on the season and period of decomposition. Dilution Plate Method was followed for the isolation of micro- organisms in PDA and Waksman media. After incubation at 30⁰C±1°C for 3 to 10 days, the number of the microbial colonies was counted in 4 replicated plates. Final data was calculated in average. The pH, temperature and moisture percentage of the soil where the decomposition took place, were determined each time during the 9 isolations.

Achievement/Findings:

In this study, the microbial population on the decomposing rice straw in the soil was found to vary in different seasons and depths. The maximum and minimum population of actinomycetes were in summer and rainy season, that of bacteria in summer and winter and that of fungi in rainy season and winter respectively. Actinomycetes was found in summer, autumn and winter except rainy season. This might, possibly, be due to the fungal population threat and antagonistic activities in the rainy season. Surface decomposition of rice straw gave the highest count of microbial population and the number gradually decreased with the increase of soil depths. The higher soil temperature (27-29⁰ C), moisture percentage (20-27%) and rainfall (10.01-19.66") in the rainy season, favoured the growth of highest number of fungal population. The soil temperature and pH decreased with the advancement of decomposition. Waksman (1916) found, the fungal population of soil to depend upon the climatic condition. The microbial number of both bacteria and fungi were found to be least towards the end of the decomposition in the 9th isolation.
