The study was carried out at Agronomy Field Laboratory, Department of Agronomy and Agricultural Extension, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, during the period of July to December’ 2007 to study the response of aromatic rice genotypes on growth and yield as influenced by spacing. Plant genotypes viz. Kataribhog, Kalijira and Chiniatop were tested against six levels of spacing viz. 15cm×15cm, 20cm×15cm, 25cm×15cm, 30cm×15cm, 35cm×15cm and Haphazard. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results revealed that variety and spacing had significant influence on the growth and yield of aromatic rice. The variety Kataribhog performed the best with respect to TDM and CGR, where Chiniatop and Kalijira performed the best for LAI and NAR, respectively. On the other hand, the closest spacing showed the highest TDM, CGR and LAI, where the widest spacing showed the highest NAR. The variety Kataribhog and the spacing 20cm×15cm produced the highest grain yield.

1. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the effect of variety and spacing on the growth and yield of aromatic rice.

The research was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory (24°22'36'' N Latitude, 88°38'27'' E Longitude and 20 m altitude), Department of Agronomy and Agricultural Extension, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi, Bangladesh during the period from July to December 2007. The experimental site under the humid tropical climate which is characterized by heavy rainfall, high humidity and high temperature during monsoon and scanty rainfall, low humidity and low temperature during winter. The land was medium high belonging to the calcareous dark grey flood plain soil type (Gangetic Alluvial Soil Tract). The soil properties of the field were pH 8.6, organic matter 0.48%, total available nitrogen 0.04%, available phosphorus 11.25ppm, available potassium 58 ppm and available sulphar 25.65 ppm. The treatments of the experiment include three varieties viz. Kataribhog, Kalijira and Chiniatop and six spacings viz. 15cm×15cm, 20cm×15cm, 25cm×15cm, 30cm×15cm, 35cm×15cm and Haphazard. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 10 m2 (4m×2.5m). The seeds were sown in nursery bed on 6th July,2007 the experimental land was uniformly fertilized with nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P2O5), potash (K2O), sulphur and zinc fertilizers @ 60, 40, 40, 10, 5 kg ha-1, respectively, as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc oxide. The whole amount of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum, zinc oxide and 1/3rd of urea were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. The 2/3rd amount of Urea were applied as topdressing in two equal splits. The first split was applied at active tillering stage at 30 DAT (days after transplanting) and the second split was applied before panicle initiation stage. Finally, 30-day old seedlings of the three varieties were transplanted in the well-puddled plots as per foresaid spacing with two seedlings hill-1 on 5 August,2007. Kataribhog, Kalijira and Chiniatop were harvested at maturity on 11th November, 5th December and 6th December, respectively. Data were recorded on plant growth parameters at 15 day intervals and grain yield at final harvest. Different growth parameters such as total dry matter (TDM), leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) were calculated by the standard formulae. The collected data were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences were adjudged by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test with the help of MSTAT software.

It was observed that all the studied plant growth parameters such as total dry matter (TDM), leaf area index (LAI), crop growth rate (CGR), net assimilation rate (NAR) at different days after transplanting (DAT) and grain yield were significantly influenced by variety. On the other hand, spacing also had significant effect on all the growth characters and grain yield of aromatic rice.
