Soil Test Based Fertilizer Management for Boro Production in North-west Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

At farm level, there exist considerable knowledge on fertilizers management for crop production but it does not concede the variability in nutrient supply and crop requirements at farm and village level.This indicates that there is a great scope for improving crop production using site=specific integrated soil/plant test basis fertilizer recommendations. However, integrated nutrient management packages for different crops and cropping patterns have not been fully developed. Therefore, this knowledge gap should be filled up for sustained soil productivity. The soil texture in the study sites were silty loam to sandy loam. Some farmers used over doses and some farmers used under doses of fertilizers for rice cultivation. As a results they failed to obtain desired yield goal.Significant yield difference were found both in soil test based and BARC recommendation based fertilizer used over the farmers dose irrespective of varieties.About 1-2 t/ha higher yield was recorded in field situations when soil test based fertilizers were used for rice production.

Objectives:

To ensure balanced fertilizer management.
To improve crop yield.
To maintain and/or improve soil productivity.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken in Boro season, 2001-02 at KGF site Kurigram and RDRS site Pirgonj to determine the soil test based fertilizer management on grain yield of rice and farmers' reaction for sustainable crop production. Soil samples were collected from the selected farmers' field of both the sites and analyzes were done with help of Soil Testing Kits. Four farmers (2 from Kurigram and 2 from Pirgonj) were selected. The varieties were BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (BCBD) with the following treatments with three replications. The treatments were: T₁ = Soil test based fertilizer dose; T₂ = BARC recommended fertilizer dose; and T₃ = Farmer dose. The fertilizers were applied as per recommendation. The yield and yield contributing data of rice for each treatment was measured following the standard methods. The collected data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Farmers used over doses of urea a d under doses of other chemical fertilizers. Thus, they failed to achieve desirable yield of Boro rice. Soil test based fertilizer management gave higher yield over BARC recommendation and farmers' doses.Therefore, higher yields motivated the farmers to test their soil for management and willing to pay for the test.
