The investigation was carried out to evaluate the water loading system and socio-economic status of the water loading station owners in three upazillas in Mymensingh district namely Trishal, Bhaluka and Muktagacha for a period of six months from April to September, 2007. Data were randomly collected from 25 water loading station owners through some selected PRA tools such as individual questionnaire, interview, key informant interview, focus group discussion (PGD) and physical observation during the water loading for live fish transportation. About 40% of the water loading station owners was in the range of 31-40 years and most of them are Muslims. Literacy rate of water loading station owners was 96% and most of them (64%) lived in tin shed house. Food expenditure of the water loading station owners was 66.68% of their total annual expenditure. About 84% of the water loading station owners was depended on upazilla health complex for their health facilities. The family size most of the water loading station owners (60%) were 4-7 members. Fifty two percent of the water loading station owners had semi-pucca while 12% had pucca sanitation facilities and about 96% of them collected their drinking water from their own tube-well. The monthly income of most of the water loading station owners (80%) was 5,000-10,000 Tk. Water loading station is a good sub sector for aquaculture business and sustainable livelihood for water loading station owners. Therefore, research work was undertaken on water loading system for transportation of live fish in three upazillas of Mymensingh district.

1. To evaluate the water loading system and socio-economic status of the water loading station owners in three upazillas in Mymensingh district namely Trishal, Bhaluka and Muktagacha for a period of six months.

The present study was conducted in three Upazilas (Trishal, Bhaluka and Muktagacha) under Mymensingh district. Before preparing the final schedule a draft interview schedule was developed. The draft schedule was pre-tested with a few samples by the researcher himself. In this pre- testing, much attention was given to any new information and filled in the draft schedule. Thus some parts of the draft schedule were improved, rearranged and modified in the actual and practical experiences gained from the pre-testing. Finally, a set of items were listed and grouped in the logical sequence, so that the water loading station owners could answer easily. The final schedule include questions on the socioeconomic characteristics, peak season of their business, monthly income, problems and other relevant aspects of water loading station owners. For this study a combination of questionnaire interview, Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) tools such as Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and crosscheck interviews were conducted with key informants such as Upazila Fisheries Officer, District Fisheries Officer, BRAC, Local leaders, officials of MACH (Management of Aquatic ecosystems through Community Husbandry) project and NGOs workers. Data processing and analysis - After collection of data, these were edited and coded. All the collected data were summarized and scrutinized carefully and recorded. Finally relevant tables were prepared in accordance with the objectives of the study. Data were presented mostly in the tabular form, because it is simple in calculation, widely used and easy to understand.

The present study was carried out to reveal the water loading system and socio-economic status of the water loading station owners in three upazillas in Mymensingh district. From the study, it was found that most of the live fish transporters used water from water loading station for transportation of live fish, fish fry and fingerling in distant place of Bangladesh. But water loading system are not good as well as they faces many types of problems such as lack of proper knowledge, long distance from the main road, damage road, electricity, sufficient credit etc. For aquaculture business water loading is an important sub sector to improve the socio-economic conditions of water loading station owners are better in compare the past study. The results of the present study indicated that all the water loading station owners have improved their socio-economic condition through their business.
