Intercropping in Banana with Some Short Duration Crops

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Intercropping delayed bunch shooting and consequently augmented the period required for harvesting of banana significantly. Banana grown with the intercrops such as lalsak, spinach and grasspea gave statistically identical yields with banana grown as sole crop. But the yield of banana was reduced significantly when intercropped with radish and mustard. The highest income was obtained from banana-radish combination followed by banana-spinach, banala-grasspea, banana-lalsak and banana-mustard combinations.

Objectives:

1. The present experiment was, therefore, conducted with some vegetables and pulses as intercrops to find out a suitable intercrop for banana under Bangladesh conditions, considering relative income from intercrops and the banana.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from September 1987 to November 1988. The experiment was laidout in the randomized complete block design with three replications. The pits were prepared at a spacing of 2.1 m following hexagonal system. Three month old uniform sword sukers of banana cv. Aroritasagar were planted on September 1987. Each unit plot was 7.5 m long and 4.9 m wide. The inter- crops grown with banana were lalsak (cv. Local), Spinach (cv. Local), grass- pea (cv. Local) radish (cv. Tasakisan) and mustard (cv Sarnpad). Thus, there were six intercropping treatments including the control (sole banana). For each banana plant 15 kg of cowdung, 1/2 kg of mustard oil cake, 260 g of urea and 240g each of triple superphosphate (TSP) and Muriate of potash (MP) were applied. The experimental plots were kept free from weeds by weeding and shallow spading. The crop was grown under proper care and management. The soil of the experimental plot was chemically a na- lysed to estimate the pH and NPK sta- tus of the soil before planting of banana ( during land preparation) and again after harvesting of the intercrops to see the effect of intercropping on the nutrient status of the soil. The soil anlysis report is summarised. Data on growth, yield components and yield of banana were collected and were statistically analysed.

Achievement/Findings:

The study has got some practical as well as commercial implications. Intercropping in banana not only reduced the cost of weed control but also gave an extra income of more then Tk, 20,000/ha over sale banana crop. Intercropping can thus assist the banana growers economically. Banana yield or the quality ( size) of banana was not reduced when inter cropped with vegetables except mustard and radish. The yield reduction in banana was more than compensated by the additional income obtained from radish. One can easily earn a some of taka 183050 per hectare by growing banana. The soil .nutrient status was little affected due to intercropping.
