Use of Extension Contact Media by the Farmers in the Adoption of Mehersagar Banana

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study focuses on the communication behaviour of banana growers with their adoption of a banana (Musa spp.) variety (Mehersagar). Data were collected during 01 August to 15 September 1999 from a sample of 100 banana growers. The communication behaviour was ascertained by asking the respondents regarding their extent of use of 18 extension contact media. They were asked to indicate whether their use of extension contact media were frequent, occasional, rare or not at all. Extension contact media use index shows that banana growers had the highest contact with the seed/ fertilizer dealers followed by local leaders and group discussion. More than half (60%) of the banana growers had medium contact compared to 31 % low and only 9% high contact. The findings demonstrate that banana growers' contact with extension media had significant positive correlations with their education, agricultural knowledge, farm size, annual income, credit avai labi I ity, organ izational partie ipation, cosrnopol iteness, innovativeness and adoption of 'Mehersagar banana.

Objectives:

1. To describe the selected individual characteristics of the Mehersagar banana growers, 2. To ascertain the extent of use of extension contact media by the Mehersagar banana growers, and 3. To explore the relationships of the selected characteristics of the Mehersagar banana growers with their use of Extension contact media.

Methodology:

The empirical data were collected through personal interviewing during 01 August to 15 September 199 from a sample of 100 Mehersagar banana growers, out of 300, under the Gazaria Union of Sakhipur Upazila of Tangail district. In all there were 13 individual characteristics which were measured either by direct scoring or by developing appropriate scales. The use of extension contact media of a respondent was. however, operationalised on the basis of extent of one's use of 18 extension contact media. A four-point Likert type scale was used to measure the LIse of extension contact media. The respondents were asked to indicate whether their use of contact media were frequent. occasional. rare. or not at all with a score of 3. 2. I and 0 respectively for each of the selected 18 extension contact media. The extension contact media score for each respondent could thus, vary from 0 to 54, zero indicating no use of the contact rned ia and 54 very high use with the contact media. However, frequency counts of responses were also recorded to compute the contact media use index (eMUI) of the respondents for each of the contact medium. The CMUI for each medium was computed by using the following formula: CMUI = N₁ X₃ + N₂ X₂ + N₃ X₁ + N₄ X₀ Where, CMUI = Contact Media Use Index N₁ = Number of farmers having frequent contact with the extension contact media, N₂ = Number of farmers having occasional contact with the extension contact media N₃ = Number of farmers having rare contact with the extension contact media, N₄ = Number of farmers having no contact with the extension contact media. The CMUI for each contact medium could range from 0 to 300, zero indicating the medium not at all used by the banana growers and 300 indicated very high use of the medium.
