Level of Awareness of Grameen Bank Credit Receiver and Non-receiver Rural Women Regarding Opportunity for Improving Standard of Living

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main objective of this paper was to determine the differences of level of awareness of credit receiver (CR) and credit non-receiver (CNR) rural women in selected areas of Dinajpur District regarding the opportunity of improving the standard of living. Two sets of samples comprising credit receiving women and credit non-receiving women were used to examine the differences of level of awareness. One hundred samples consisting of 50- CR (members of Grameen Bank) and 50 CNR samples were collected from two selected areas of Dinajpur district. The paper shows that average awareness level regarding the opportunity for improving the standard of living as measured by the Awareness Index (AI) is 57.66 percent for CR women and 51.76 percent for CNR women, which indicated that CR samples have higher awareness level as compared to the credit non-receiving samples. Logit regression evidences that education; age and participation in organizational activities have influenced the awareness level of the rural women significantly.

Objectives:

1. To determine the differences of level of awareness regarding the opportunity for improving the standard of living, and 2. To determine factors influencing the level of awareness of the credit receiver and credit non-receiver rural women.

Methodology:

Study Area - To attain the objective of the present paper two villages namely Bahala under Biral thana and Masimpur under Sadar thana of Dinajpur district were purposively selected. The viI/ages frorn which credit receiver (CR) of GB branch and credit non-receiver (CNR) rural women were selected possess similar socio-economic attributes and homogeneous physiographic conditions. Sampling and Data Collection - Total numbers of CRs in Masirnpur were found to be 200 and the numbers of CNRs rural women were found to be 250 in village Bahala. A sample of 100 women comprising 50 CR women from Masimpur and 50 credit NCR women from Bahala was selected randomly. In conformity with the objective of the study, a comprehensive survey schedule was prepared in such a way that all necessary items for determining the status of awareness of credit receiver and non-receiver rural women could be included. A draft schedule was prepared and tested among some CR and NCR rural women of the two villages. The survey schedule was finalized after making necessary correction, modification and adjustments. Analysis of Data - After data collection was over, the collected data were tabulated and analyzed. Awareness Index (AI) was used to determine the level of awareness ofthe CR and CNR rural women. Awareness Index - The awareness Index (AI) was calculated considering the knowledge as well as attitude on socio-political, cultural, family planning, health consciousness and media exposure. In this study Al was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

From the findings it is clear that CR women are relatively more aware regarding the opportunity for improving the standard of living than that of CNR women. The main reason may be due to the contribution of Grameen Bank's dedicated workers who have been constantly in touch with their members and have been providing training for ski II development, nutrition, health, sanitation, and income generating activities. Studies indicate that GB's credit program has exhibited direct positive impact in terms of reduction in family size; higher contraceptive prevalence rates and improved family welfare. GB attempts to encourage and motivate its members to have better housing, better drinking water, a cleaner environment, more plants and trees, better sanitation and health. Specific credit programs of GB i.e., the housing loan, the sanitary loan and the hand tubewell loan, are supporting these. However, it may be said that only women's training is not enough to raise awareness. There is a need to sensitize the male person of the rural community, because cultural values are primarily responsible for this lower awareness status of women in Bangladesh. In this patriarchal society these values are created and still carried by the male sections of the society.
