The objectives of this study were (I) to assess the [PM knowledge of the members of different Farmer Field Schools (FFS) conducted by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Cooperative for American Relief Everywhere (CARE) independently and jointly, (ii) to determine the extent of performance of DAE and CARE independently and jointly for the successful operation of different FFSs, in terms of frequency of resource persons' involvement in FFS, number of sessions conducted by the trainers' during the period of FFS, time spent in hours by the resource personnel in conducting FFS, frequency of monitoring and supervision made by the resource persons during the period of FFS, amount of inputs supplied for conducting FFS, and (iii) to explore the relationship between the [PM knowledge gained by the members of different FFSs and some of their selected characteristics. Data were collected from 183 members of FFS, representing 3 DAE, 3 CARE and one joint school through interview-schedule in Gauripur Thana of Mymensingh District during March 16 to April 30, 2000. The members ofDAE's FFS ranked first, while CARE's FFS ranked second and members of joint FFS ranked third in case of acquiring [PM knowledge. Performance of DAE led FFS was far better than CARE-FFS as well as joint FFS. The personnel of DAE spent more time and delivered more inputs to the members of their FFS, while CARE could not provide equal facilities for more frequent visits to their FFS members as done by DAE. The case of joint FFS was found disappointing. Out of eleven selected characteristics, only four such as, academic qualification, extension media contact, innovativeness and aspiration had significant positive relationship with acquiring knowledge by the members of FFS.

1. To assess the IPM knowledge of the members of different FFSs conducted by DAE and CARE independently and jointly, 2. To determine the extent of performance of DAE and CARE separately and jointly for the successful operation of different FFSs, and 3. To explore the relationships between the IPM knowledge gained by the members of FFSs and each of their selected characteristics.

The study was conducted in the Gauripur thana under Mymensingh district in which both the DAE and CARE have been working with FFSs separately as well as jointly to better equip the fanners for maintaining susta i nabi I ity in agriculture. The total number of DAE's FFSs were six with 150 members of which three FFSs were selected through simple random sampling consisting of 75 members (each FFS with 25 members). Similarly, CARE had 36 FFSs with 740 members of which three FFSs were selected through simple random sampling with 75 members. There was only one FFS with 33 members which was jointly operated by DAE and CARE. The joint school was included in the study and there was no scope to sample it. However, cluster sampling procedure was followed in selecting the FFS members for inclusion in the sample. Therefore, the total sample size was 183 (75 +75+33). The I PM knowledge gained by FFS members was measured according to the assigned marks against each of 17 questions. For each of the correct answer the respondent could obtain full marks while for partial answer he/she got partial marks according to the extent of correctness. However, a score of zero was given for each wrong answer. Altogether, there were 17 questions covering all aspects of IPM included in the test. Thus, IPM knowledge score of a member of FFS was computed by summing his obtained scores for all the questions. The total possible score could vary from 0 to 34, 0 indicated no (PM knowledge and 34 indicated highest (PM knowledge by an individual member. Performance made by DAE and CARE independently and jointly was measured based on the actual figure obtained from the responses of FFS members. In order to collect relevant information an interview schedule was carefully designed and used. The interview schedule was pre- tested with 35 members of 3 different FFS of which one was operated by DAE (15 members) and one was operated by CARE (15 members) and one was operated together by DAE CARE (5 members). Validity and reliability of the instruments were tested before its use. Data were collected by the researcher himself through a door to door visit of all the members of randomly selected seven FFS's during 16 March to 30 April, 2000.

Out of eleven selected characteristics, only four viz. academic qualification, extension media contact, innovativeness and aspiration had significant positive relationship with acquiring knowledge by the member of all types of FFSs. Besides in case of DAE's FFS, annual family income and agril. training experience had positive significant relationship. In case of CARE's FFS, farm size had significant negative relationship while annual family income and agril. training experience were positively related with IPM knowledge. But in case of joint FFS farm size, non-Iocalite behaviour and attitude The members of DAE's FFS received more IPM knowledge than the members of CARE's and joint FFS. In terms of gathering knowledge the members of DAE's FFS ranked first; the meinbers of CARE FFS were second and the member of joint FFS were in the third position. Performance of DAE and CARE and both of DAE and CARE was not equal in running their respective FFS. Linkage between DAE and CARE was poor for the conduction of joint FFS.
