The study was conducted in Jarnirdia village of Bhaluka Upazila in Mymensingh district. In total, 60 samples were taken of which 25 were small, 20 were medium and 15 were large farms wh ich were selected purposively for collection of necessary data, The study examined the role of women practising homestead agro-forestry (HAF) enterprises in decision making and poverty alleviation. Data were collected for one year operation of farms beginning from June 1997 to May 1998. In order to investigate the extent of influence on the decision making status and poverty alleviation potential of the respondents, logistic regression analysis was used. It was found that women of HAF farms were involved in homestead decision making to a greater extent. Findings also showed that HAF has a positive role in poverty alleviation. Results of the logistic regression analysis estimated through maximum likelihood (ML) method showed that the co-efficient of education was 0.423 indicating that education has a positive and significant effect on the probability of taking most of the household decisions by the women alone. It was found that provision of irrigation, supply of credit at lower interest rate. supply of fertilizers and quality seeds at reasonable prices. availability of insecticides and pesticides were considered as important areas which should be addressed seriously to encourage farmers to adopt HAF practices.

I. To examine the role of homestead agro- forestry practising women in decision making and poverty alleviation and 2. To identify the problems and make suggestions for future development of homestead agro forestry

The study was conducted in Jamirdia village under Habirbari union of Bhaluka Upazila in Mymensingh district. Justification of area selection was that some HAF interventions were executed 10 years ago in the area. A sample of 60 HAF practising farmers from J 20 were selected purposively for collection of necessary data in which 25 were small, 20 were medium and 15 were large farmers. Data were collected during one-year operation from June J 997 to May 1998. On the basis of women's participation in decision making process three qualitative categories were developed in this study. Male, female and both. In the category of male, only male members took part in the decision making process. Under the category of female. women took part in decision making in different aspects and under both categories, men and women took part III decision making on a specific matter. Logistic regression analysis In order to investigate the extent of influence on the decision-making status, logistic regression analysis was used. In this study logit model was used to estimate using binary dependent variable. The binary variable was assigned the value 1 for decision in household decision making process taken by women alone and zero otherwise. The logit model has been specified as follows: Yi = bo+b,X,+b2X2+b3X3+b4X4+bsXs+b6X6+Ui Log (Y /1- Y)= bo+b1X1 +b2X2+b3X3+b4X4+b5X5+b6X6+Ui L= bo+b1X1+b2X2+b3X3+b4X4+b5X5+b6X6+Ui Where  Y= household decision level index expressed in percentage. It is a binary variable having 1 for scoring above 50 percent of household decisions taken by women alone and zero otherwise. Xi=age. X2= education. X3= family size. X4=homestead area (hectare), X5=gross income of farms practising HAF (Tk), X6=length of practising HAF (year), U i=error term. L. the log of the odds ratio, is not only linear in X but also linear in parameters. L is called the logit and hence the name logit model. As Y goes 0 to 1. The logit L goes from -a to +a. That is although the probabilities lie between 0 and 1. The logits are not so bounded. The interpretation of the logit model is b. The slope measures the changes in L for a unit change in X and the logit model assumes that the log of odds ratio is linearly related to X1.

I. In view. of the importance of HAF cultivation for solution of nutritional aspects as well as changing dietary habit it is recommended that all out efforts should be made to increase the production of HAF in the country. The motivational campaign should be continued to increase the participation of women in homestead agriculture. 2. In view of the unavailability of reasonable amount of homestead area for homestead production a special plan for optimal utilization of amount of homestead area should be designed. Women having slnall homestead size need to be motivated and be made ski lled : so that they can" increase. volume of production and can solve their problems and could increase productivity. 3. It is also noted that homestead is always the domain of women who are likely to be efficient in homestead agro-forestry production if training programs on skills of modern techniques are imparted to women by the government or any other organ ization. 4. It is recommended that arrangement should be made for providing functional I iteracy to household women to help them acquire adequate knowledge on different aspects of homestead prod uction and nutrition.
