Influence of Dates of Sowing on the Growth, Dry Matter Production and Yield of Baby Corn

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To understand the physiological reasons for variation in growth and yield of baby corn at varying dates of sowing in three different season's Kharif I, Kharif II and Rabi; an experiment was conducted with baby com variety pacific 423 grown during the period from February 2004 to May 2005. Significantly the highest husked cob (2.14 t/ha) and green fodder (24.10 t/ha) yield was obtained from 30 November sowing followed by 15 December and 30 December sowing. The lowest cob (1.62 t/ha) and green fodder yield (18.32 t/ha) were obtained from 15 February sowing. Length, diameter, weight of cob and cob yield, harvest index (III), crop growth duration and physiological parameters like LAI, LAD and TDM were higher in Rabi grown baby corn than that of Kharif II and Kharif I crop. CGR, RGR and NAR were more during Kharif 1. From the study it might be concluded that baby corn could be grown in all the three seasons and November, March and September would be the optimum sowing time for Rabi, KharifI and KharifII respectively.

Objectives:

To understand the influence of date of sowing and seasons on grow and yield of baby corn in terms of growth parameters.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the period from February 2004 to January 2005. The trial was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. Eighteen different dates of sowing in three seasons Kharif I (15 February, 28 February, March, 30 March, 15 April, 30 April, 15 May and 30 May), Kharif II (15 September, 30 September, October, 30 October) and Rabi (15 November, 30 November, 15 December, 30 December, 15 Janus and 30 January) were included in the experiment. Plant spacing 50 cm x 20 cm (1,00,000 plants/ha) was used and the unit plot size was 5 m x 4 m. Fertilizers @ of 120-60-40-20, N-P₂0₅-K₂0-S kg/ha We applied. One third of N and all other fertilizers were applied as basal and the remaining 2/3^rd N was applied in two equal splits at 25 and 45 DAE (days after emergence). The baby corn variety Pacific-423 was sown according to sowing dates with assured moisture of the soil following pre-sowing irrigation. Harvesting was done at flowering stage when the silk was just emerged. The total dry matter (TDM) weight was recorded from ten randomly selected plants from each plot at different growth stages. The growth parameters were estimated during the silking stage. For growth analysis, the crop growth rate (CGR), t relative growth rate (RGR) , net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area index (LAI) and leaf area duration (LAD) of whole plants was determined. Metrological data was collected daily at the experimental site during the crop growth period up to harvesting. The data were pooled and statistically analyzed following "MSTAT" program and the critical differences were used to compare the means at P=0.05.
