Effects of Npk Fertilizers on the Protein Fat and Starch Contents of Rice Straw

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Results of a study conducted on the effect of NPK fertilizers on the protein, starch and fat contents of rice straw are presented and discussed. The protein and fat contents of rice straw increased with increasing supply of nitrogen but were little affected by P and K supply. Starch content declined with N supply and the effect of P and K on starch content was inconsistent. The combined effect of N and P was positive for straw protein and fat and negative for straw starch. The combination effect of P and K on straw protein was variable and the effect was depressing on starch and fat contents. The combined effect of N and K was in favour of fat content only at low levels of applied N. The protein content of straw was highest at 120 lbs N, 120 lbs P₂0₅ and 40 lbs K₂O per acre level. The highest starch and fat contents were recorded at 80 Ibs N, 80 Ibs K₂O and 120 lbs N per acre levels, respectively. The straw protein and fat contents were positively correlated while the relationships between protein and starch and starch and fat were negative.

Objectives:

To know effects of fertilizer application and exotic variety trial on the feed value of the rice straw

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm Brahmaputra alluvial tract, using transplanted aman as test crop. Urea, T.S.P. and muriate of potash were applied at 4 levels viz, 0, 40, 80 and 120 lbs/acre as N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 in 64 combinations. The design of the experiment was in randomised block with 4 replications and having a plot size of 18 ft x 12 ft with an inter plot distance of 4 ft. Full dose of T.S.P., Muriate of potash and half of the total urea were applied at a time before transplantation and the remaining half of the urea was applied after 45 days. Three seedlings per hill with an inter hill space of 6 inches and inter row space of 8 inches were transplanted. All protective measures were taken as and when needed for optimum growth. Five hills were statistically selected from each plot for sampling and laboratory analysis. The data were statistically processed to find out (a) the effects of N, P & K considered singly at different levels of PK, NK and NP respectively (b) the joint effects of NP, PK and NK at different levels of K, N & P respectively and (c) the joint effects of all the three i.e. NPK considered together at different levels. The relationships between the analytical data and the fertilizers doses and also the correlation effects have been studied.

The data on fat content in straw indicated that application of 120 Ibs N per acre produced highest accumulation. With all the three nutrient elements (NPK) increasing simultaneously however, the fat content went on increasing after a fall at 40 Ibs N, P₂0₅ & K₂0. The implies that adverse effect of PK has been more covered by at higher doses. The combined effect of N and P was positive for straw protein and fat and negative for straw starch. The combined effect of P and K on straw protein was variable and the effect was depressing on starch and fat contents.
