Improving Water and Fertilizer Use Efficiency for Wheat Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Irrigation water is vital input for increased food production. As wheat is cultivated in dry season its need irrigation and optimal fertilizer doses for better production. But systemic study in this regard is scanty. Thus, an experiment was carried out at ICM sites to determine irrigation levels with optimal fertilizer doses. Fertilizer and irrigation interaction effects on wheat production revealed that standard dose of fertilizer with 4 irrigation produced highest yield 4.94 t/ha in Kurigram area compared to 3,23 t/ha in Piganj area. The corresponding water productivity were 14.16 kg/ha-mm and 9.65 kg/ha-mm, respectively, which was slightly lower than other treatment combinations. The optimum water requirement for wheat production was about 240 mm of water applied in 4 irrigation, the first one at 20 DAS and the subsequent ones at 15 days interval in Kurigram and Pirganj areas.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum number of irrigation and water use efficiency for maximum yield.
To determine the interaction effect of irrigation number and fertilizer doses on wheat production.
To find out the economically viable combination of irrigation and fertilizer applications.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken in Rabi season 2001-02 at GKF site Kurigram and RDRS site, Pirganj under integrated crop management (ICM), PETRRA sub-project. In each site, 3 shallow tube wells (STW) based farmers were selected. The soil texture of the sites was determined. The wheat variety was Kanchan. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with the following treatment combinations and replicated three to four times within the selected farmers fields. The treatments were:

a) Irrigation levels: I₁ = Two irrigation, CRI (18-21 DAS) + (35-40 DAS); I₂ = Three irrigation, CRI + (35-40 DAS) + (55-60 DAS); and I₃ = Four irrigation, CRI + (35-40 DAS) + (55-60 DAS) + (75-80 DAS).

b) Fertilizer doses: F₁ = 100 : 60 : 40 NPK kg/ha (standard dose); F₂ = ^0 : #6 :24 NPK kg/ha (Medium dose) ; and F₃ = Farmers practice.

In both sites the experiments were established on last week of November to first week of December, 2001 in the farmers' field at the optimum sowing time of wheat. The soil texture of the sites is silty loam to sandy loam. Fertilizers were applied as per recommended doses. The amount of water applied for each irrigation was measured by volumetric method or V-Notch and the rainfall data was recorded. The yield and yield contributing data of wheat for each water treatment was measured following the standard methods. The water use efficiency was also calculated for each treatment combinations. The collected data were analyzed statistically and Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to determine the significant differences among the treatments.

Achievement/Findings:

Standard fertilizer dose with four irrigation produced highest yield 4.94 t/ha and 3.53 t/ha in Kurigram and Pirganj, respectively and corresponding water productivity were 14.16 kg/ha-mm and 10.80 kg/ha-mm.
