A research work was carried out under glasshouse condition at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during Novernber 1998 to April 1999. Two chilli accessions viz. C- 0277 (water stress tolerant) and (-0272 (susceptible), selected from a previous experiment were included in this experiment to study the effects of various water treatments applied at different growth stages. Six water treatments viz. W1= watering once daily, W2 = watering twice daily, W3 = Watering at 4 days interval, W4 = Watering at 8 days interval, W5 = Watering at 16 days interval and Wo = no watering (control) were imposed at three stages of growth and development viz. SI= Vegetative stage, S2 = Flowering stage and S3 = Fruiting stage. The results revealed that all the studied characters varied significantly between two chilli accessions when considered as the single or combined effect of the factors involved. Among the growth stages, highest individual Fruit weight was obtained when water treatments were applied in vegetative stage (421.8Img) followed by fruiting (297.76mg) and flowering stage (268.74mg).

To have a comparative picture about the effects of water stress on the physio-morphological and yield contributing characters of two primarily selected water stress tolerant and susceptible accessions of chilli under glasshouse condition.

The experiment was carried out in polybags under glasshouse condition at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 1998 to April 1999. For the present expenment two accessions of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) viz. C-0277 and C-0272 were collected from the Spices Research Centre (SRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur. These were, in fact, included in a previous study and were selected as water stress (for both deficit and excess water) tolerant and susceptible accessions. In the previous experiment ten accessions were included which were collected from Spices Research Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BART). Those were collected from different parts of Bangladesh and accession number was given. The chilli accessions C-0277 and C-0272 used in this experiment were selected as water stress tolerant and susceptible ones respectively from the previous experiment. Split plot design was followed with 3 replications, where water treatments were assigned in main plots and accessions in the sub plots. Single pot was used per treatment. Six water treatments used were Wl= Watering once everyday, W2 = Watering twice everyday, W3 = Watering at 4 days interval, W4 = Watering at 8 days interval, W5 = Watering at 16 days interval and WO = no watering (control). Three stage of growth and development of chilli plants were considered for application of water treatments- S1= Vegetative stage, S2 = Flowering stage and S3 = Fruiting stage. Therefore, a total of 36 treatment combinations were included for the study from three different factors. Polybag capacity (analogue to field capacity) of the growing medium in the specific polybag size and weight used in the experiment was determined to maintain optimum and uniform moisture level particularly at the time of seed sowing. To determine polybag capacity, randomly selected 3 bags from each replication were evenly watered until water leaked from the bottom. After 8 hours of drainage, sand or compost samples were collected in soil cores and oven dried at 80°C for 72 hours. The moisture content of the samples were determined and used in determining the polybag capacity of the total pre weighed (5kg) growing medium. The polybags in each block were arranged in North -South rows for proper sunlight absorption. Each bag in the experiment was watered to bag capacity level one to two days before sowing of seeds. Following emergence, bags were watered as and when necessary before imposition of water treatments. Data were collected on no. of leaves/plant, leaf area/plant (cm), plant height (cm), canopy diameter (cm), root length (cm), root volume (ml), no. of fruits/plant, fruit length (mm), fruit diameter (mm), individual fruit weight (mg), fruit yield/plant (g), leaf dry weight (g), stem dry weight (g), root dry weight (g) and fruit dry weight/plant (g). During dry matter determination, the samples were dried in an electric oven at 800Co for 72 hours and finally, the dry weight was recorded by weighing the dried samples in an electric balance.

So, from these results, the chilli accessions C-0277 and C-0272 were finally proved as water stress tolerant and susceptible chilli cultivars (accessions) respectively, of Bangladesh. These two accessions of chilli which were preliminarily came out as water stress tolerant and susceptible ones respectively once again remained same and proved true.
