Wetland Environment of Chalan Beel: a Case Study on Singra Beel

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Wetland is an important part of environent viz., plays significant role in conserving biodiversity, ecological balance as well as resources and livelihoods etc. But it has been degraded day by day due to various anthropogenic and natural causes such as landuse change, over extraction of its resources and climate change. However, lack of policy implementation and institutional corruptions are also responsible behind this tragic destruction. The population growth rate of Bangladesh is very high (1.47%). The population is increasing and as a result per capita share of land is decreasing in the beel area. The cultivable land use has been increased to 6.05% from 1985 to 2005. One cropland has been turned into two crops and two crops turned into three crops land. Irrigation in agriculture land has enough advantages but its negative impacts are also degrading the environment and soil. Government rules and regulations were prepared during British period but these were not suitable of this beel. Thus, planned actions are needed to save the wetland ecology and their resources through sustained wetland resources management for long term benefits.

Objectives:

1. The main objectives of this study are to find out the root causes of wetland degradation due to lack of the rules or policies and problems of sustainable wetland management.

Methodology:

Singra Beel of Natore district is one of the important areas of Chalan Beel. Noted rivers in the Chalan Beel area are Gur, Atrai, Baranai, Gumani, Nandakunja and Nagar. Twelve Unions were selected purposively to collect information from peasants, local elite and local administration, NGOs of Singra beel. The data were collected on landuse patterns, socioeconomic, environmental condition and soil, land management system and land related acts, procedures and notices for Chalan beel.. The primary data were collected on landuse survey, household of concerned research area, Local leaders like Sarder/Matber/Mondal (local leader), Ward commissioner, NGO’s (Non Government Organization), workers, related persons like Deputy Commissioner (DC), additional DC (Revenue), Additional DC (Land) and Assistant Commissioner (AC) and town planners. The secondary data were collected from related documents published from different sources.

Achievement/Findings:

Excess use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides and other harmful activities are running on in full sewing. Single crop land is sustainable for wetland s pecifically for Chalan beel but double or triple crops practices increasingly in Singra beel. Excess underground water is also being used in agricultural land for irrigation purpose, which is also not sustainable for the wetland. Enormous infrastructures are being built in the wetland area. Agricultural practices on the river beds in dry season are also not good for sustainable management of wetland resources. Because destroying the river beds and banks decrease the depth of rivers which reduces the capacity of holding of water in rainy season. Then water overflows in the areas and causes flood. In this way, Chalan beel wetland areas are being reduced. In 1909 the area of Chalan beel was more than 1000 square km but now in 2005 it has reduced to 368 squire km. Due to reducing wetland, biodiversity and fisheries resources are also being destroyed.
