Alternative Water Distribution System for Minimizing Water Losses in Shallow Tube Well (stw) Irrigation System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Planed and effective irrigation water distribution system and its efficient management play an important role in the command area development of any irrigation project. Use of earthen open channel for irrigation water distribution is common, which suffers low conveyance and application efficiency, less area coverage and high maintenance cost. Therefore, improved earthen canal and plastic pipe (hose-pipe) water distribution systems may be an alternative system in the present socio-economic condition of the resource poor farmers. Conveyance losses varied from 4.71 to 6.31 l/s/100 m for earthen canal, which was 33 to 51% of the actual STW discharge; for improved earthen canal it varied from 3.14 to 3.95 l/s/100 m, which was 22 to 31% of the STW discharge and for hose-pipe it varied from 0.26 to 0.33 l/s/100 m, which was 2 to 3 % of the STW discharge. Conveyance water saved by improved earthen canal and hose-pipe over the earthen canal was 32 to 46% and 94 to 96%, respectively The average conveyance time saved by improved earthen canal and hose-pipe over the earthen canal was 54 and 79%, respectively. Considering the conveyance water saved, time saved and fuel saved, the increased command are would be doubled by improved earthen canal and hose-pipe water distribution systems.

Objectives:

To compare the conveyance losses among different water distribution system.
To determine the irrigation time among different distribution system.
To increase the command area.
To find out the cost-effectiveness of water distribution system under STW irrigation system.

Methodology:

The experiment was undertaken in Rabi and Boro season, 2001-02 at GKF site, Kurigram and RDRS site, Pirgonj under ICM, PETRRA sub-project.. In each site, 3 STWs were selected. At least 30 m improved earthen canal were prepared at each STW site by clay soil coating and compaction. The following alternative water distribution treatments were used: T₁= Earthen canal; T₂ = Improved earthen canal; and T₃ = Hose-pipe (4-5" diameter). Actual discharges of STW were measured in 15 days interval of the whole irrigation season by volumetric method. Achievement/Findings:

Considering the construction and materials costs of different water distribution systems, the average costs were Tk. 21.45, Tk. 57.60 and Tk. 21.40 per meter per year for earthen canal, improved earthen canal and hose-pipe , respectively.. Finally, in considering the conveyance water saved, irrigation time saved and command area increased , improved earthen canal and hose-pipe use would be the best option for STW irrigation water distribution.
