Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A gear box system of self-propelled power unit was developed in the research workshop at BRRI. Power unit of reaper and mower were tested in paddy field, wheat field and play ground respectively. The performance of reaper and mower were found satisfactory. The existing gear box has a provision of single forward speed and backward speed. When engine is started, all gears in the gear box move either engaging or disengaging clutch. Backward gear always moves but keeps idle when the reaper/mower is in forward motion. Power is transmitted in reduced form from gear box to axle through chain and sprocket.

Objectives:

To design a gearbox with mechanism of a forward and a backward speed
To design a chassis of self-propelled power unit.

Methodology:

The complete design of power unit has been done with the help of AutoCAD tools. Fabrication of the power unit has been done at BRRI Research Workshop by the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) using the locally available materials i.e. M.S flat bar, M.S sheet, angle bar, shaft, bearing, pulley, nut-bolt etc have been used for fabrication.

Achievement/Findings:

The developed power unit is very simple, lightweight, and sturdy in design. It is also small in size due to compact design. The light duty low cost diesel engine has been used as a prime mover. Therefore, the cost of machine per unit length is low, and thus the cost of harvesting operation is also low. It has been attached with lawn mower/reaper and tested. The performance of the power unit was satisfactory.
