Comparative Study on Different Field Mowers

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Comparative study of the performances of different field mowers was evaluated in BRRI play ground. The forward speed of BRRI field mower was found 3.02 km/hr. It has a large diameter (78 cm) blade. Its effective field capacity was 0.22-0.24 ha/hr and fuel consumption (diesel) was 1.2 l/ha. Tk 52 is needed to cut grass per hector. The cutting height of grass is ranged from 4-6 cm from the surface. BRRI field mower cuts about 0.10 ha/hr and 0.04 ha/hr more than rotary and power tiller mounted mower respectively. It also saves Tk.453/ha and Tk.94/ha over rotary and power tiller mounted mower. Its grass cutting performance is excellent than other mowers. It saves more fuel cost, time, labor and maintenance cost than other mowers. So the use of BRRI field mower will be beneficial/profitable to the farmers.

Methodology:

BRRI has developed a field mower for beautification on its premises. It is run by a self propelled power unit. Different kinds of lawn mower imported from foreign countries (China, Japan, Thailand etc.) are used for grass cutting. The prices of these mowers are very high. Both the mowers were tested in BRRI field and different kinds of data were collected for evaluation of the performance of the mowers.

Performance and efficiency of the BRRI mower:

The fuel consumption ranged from 0.50 to 0.70 l/hr.
The average field capacity and field efficiency of the mower were 0.243 ha/hr and 87% respectively.
The cutting blade diameter was 80 cm and its speed was 1326 rpm.
The forward speed of the field mower was 3.3 km/hr.
The cutting height of grass ranged from 4 to 6 cm from the ground.
Cost is Tk.52/ha
