A study on cone penetration resistance of agricultural soil was conducted in BRRI west byed soil. It was found that the cone penetration resistance is decreased with the increased moisture content. The maximum cone penetration resistance was found 4000 kN at the moisture content of 15.41%. The cone penetration resistance is decreased at increasing rate up to 22.2% mc. At 22.2% mc, minimum cone penetration resistance is found (347 kN/m2). For rice bed soil (clay loam), 22.2% moisture content is optimum for minimum tillage. Above 22.2% mc, cone penetration resistance is increased due to soil adhesion, compression, particle rearrangement etc. A cone penetration model was developed for cone penetration resistance in terms of dry density and moisture content for the soil type. From this model it can be possible to determine cone penetration resistance at any point by knowing relative moisture content and dry density.

  • To determine the optimum moisture content for minimum tillage of the BRRI rice bed soil
  • To develop a mathematical model in terms of moisture content (mc), dry density, and cone penetration resistance (qc) of soil.

 

Materials and methods:

The experiment was conducted at West Byed of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur by a proving ring cone penetrometer.

Cone penetration resistance: Cone penetration resistance may be defined by the following equation,

qc = Fc/Ap

where,  qc = cone penetration resistance, kN/m2

Fc =cone resistance force, kN

Ap = Projected area of cone base, m2

Determination of dry density (γd)

The dry density was calculated by the following formula:

Dry density =  γb/(1+%mc) (gm/cc) 

Cone penetration (CP) model: One of the objectives of this study was to develop a mathematical relationship for cone penetration resistance in terms of dry density and moisture content for the soil type. Visualizing the cone penetration resistance-moisture content-dry density relationship for the soil type has been shown in three dimensional surfaces.

The conclusions are as follows:

  1. The cone penetration resistance and dry density is negatively co-related with moisture content.
  2. For rice bed soil (clay loam), minimum cone penetration resistance was found at 22.2 % moisture content.
  3. Cone penetration resistance-dry density-moisture content relationship in 3-D space for a particular soil enables one to make practical use of the cone penetrometer test for soil compaction related studies.
  4. In tillage, cone penetration resistance measurements are to detect compact layers, predict plow drought, the performance of cultivator tines, the performance of cultivator tines etc. From the cone penetration resistance data, we can specify the soil depending for predicting the draft force.
