Assessment of Palm Oil as Fuel in Diesel Engine

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Palm oil biodiesel, also known as palm oil methyl ester (PME), differs from other types of biodiesel in its grade of molecule unsaturation. Assessment of palm oil in diesel engine as an alternative fuel was done in BRRI Sramik colony pond and BRRI Generator cooling water tank. The engine speed was maintained constant at rated speed by adjusting the fuel supply. Smoke color was also observed. White Smoke was found in case of palm oil while black for diesel. The level of particulates was checked by visually. As palm oil contains no sulphur, SO₂ emission was not present in its exhaust. On the other hand, diesel engine was run on diesel and palm oil for 30 minutes and fuel consumption was found 270, 240 ml respectively. Price of each liter diesel and palm oil is Tk 45, and 70 respectively. In the experiment it was found that diesel saved about Tk 9/hr over palm oil in diesel engine used to use in irrigation. Palm oil is environmental friendly but not economical.

Objectives:

To test palm oil as an alternative fuel in diesel engine
To compare the performances of palm oil with diesel in diesel engine

Methodology:

Palm oil was used in diesel engine to irrigate in paddy field and to cut grass in BRRI playground. Cost comparison between diesel and palm oil was done. Black smoke density was observed visually and smell of exhaust gas was also tested.

Achievement/Findings:

Assessment of palm oil in diesel engine as an alternative fuel was done BRRI Sramik colony pond and BRRI Generator cooling water tank. Diesel engine was started running on palm oil by hand cranking with no difficulty. It runs steadily without fluctuations in the speed. It lifted water like the engine run on diesel.

Smoke color was also observed at no load, half load and rated load conditions. White Smoke was found in case of palm oil while black for diesel.

The level of particulates as gauged by visually check appears whether running on diesel or palm oil. As palm oil contains no sulphur, SO₂ emission was not present in its exhaust. Furthermore, the pungent smell typical of diesel exhaust was not present.
