Developed machinery were users’ friendly and made of locally available materials. Fabrications of the reaper and the mini-power tiller were also completed at BRRI Research Workshop. Maximum modifications were made of existing BRRI developed self-propelled reaper. A simple gearbox was used for one forward and one reverse speed. Some tests were conducted to evaluate the overall performance of the BRRI developed self-propelled reaper during last three years (2011, 2012 and 2013) comparing with imported self-propelled reaper. The average field capacity of the BRRI reaper was 0.272 ha/hr compared to 0.204 ha/hr for imported reaper. Whereas the average field capacity of manual harvesting was 0.008 ha/hr. The average fuel consumption of imported reaper and BRRI developed self-propelled reaper were 0.733 l/hr and 0.825 l/hr, respectively. The walking speed of BRRI developed self-propelled reaper is higher than that of imported reaper. But this higher speed is not a problem for an operator to operate the reaper during field operation as it is adjusted for on road and off road condition. The same power unit of the reaper was used for garden tilling purposes changing the tiller accessories instead of reaper unit.

  Performance evaluation
  1. Enhancement of self-propelled reaper and mini-power tiller through introduction and field test at different location in Bangladesh.
  2. Ensure timely harvest and cultivation to increase cropping intensity through the developed machinery.
  3. Minimize human drudgery and post harvest losses.

The drawings of self-propelled reaper and mini-power tiller were completed with the help of AutoCAD tools. The self-propelled reaper was fabricated at BRRI Research Workshop using locally available materials. The same power unit of self-propelled reaper has been used as a power unit of mini power tiller. Maximum modifications were made of existing BRRI developed self-propelled reaper. A simple gearbox was used for one forward and one reverse speed. The chassis of power unit was also changed to provide better balance during field operation. Side clutch was provided for turning. Diameter of the wheel increased to raise the height of wheel axle and chain sprocket to avoid the straw twisting with sprocket. Lug wheel was provided to give better traction and floating action in the lodged water soil for boro crop. To evaluate the overall performance of the BRRI developed self-propelled reaper, some tests were conducted during last three years (2011, 2012 and 2013) comparing with imported self-propelled reaper. In these tests BRRI dhan-28 were harvested in Boro and T.aman seasons at Rangpur, Jhenaidah, Gazipur and Rajshahi Regional stations of BRRI.

A low cost self-propelled reaper with a simple power transmission unit of a gearbox was designed using locally available materials.

Major modification was made for existing BRRI self-propelled reaper. Whole power transmission system has been changed. A gearbox was adopted with two forward and one reverse speed.

On an average 74% and 03% time was saved by the BRRI develop self-propelled reaper over manual harvesting and imported self-propelled reaper respectively.

Weight of the reaper was balanced by using tail wheel which is the great advantage of BRRI developed self-propelled reaper. In imported reaper, the operator had to bend his body during harvesting paddy due to its imbalance weight.

The same power unit of the reaper was used for mini power tiller. Instead of reaper unit, tiller accessories were attached and observed that it worked quite well.
