Assessment of Farm Reservoir for Crop Production in the Coastal Area at Sonagazi-2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to assess the use of existing farm reservoir for crop production; to renovate existing farm reservoir for water potentiality and crop productivity and to estimate economic benefit of farm reservoir for land productivity improvement and improving livelihood of the farmers.Three reservoirs were selected for rainfall and runoff collection at BRRI farm, Sonagazi, which were previously constructed. Twenty five centimeter height embankment was constructed to store 12.03 m³ (52.03–40.00 m³) extra rainwater than that of the FR capacity. Rainwater harvesting in a reservoir with 25 cm high embankment conserved more water than without embankment, which could increase area to irrigate Rabi crops in the coastal area. It was observed that Rainfed T.Aman rice-Tomato with irrigation cropping sequence is more profitable than other cropping sequences. It is also evident that cultivating HYV rice in Aman season farmers can get more benefit which can improve the livelihood of the coastal area farmers.

Methodology:

Considering, size of a farm reservoir (FR) 6 m × 6 m with a depth of 2 m having side slope 1:1 and capacity 40 m³. Regard as 225 m² service area (crop area) as catchment area to collect runoff for FR. FR area was 18% of the service area. Three reservoirs were selected for rainfall and runoff collection at BRRI farm, Sonagazi, which were previously constructed. Rainfall and storage were measured by raingauge and staff gauge. Twenty five centimeter height embankment was constructed to store 12.03 m³ (52.03–40.00 m³) extra rainwater than that of the FR capacity. Two inlets were provided in FR to collect runoff. When FR was filled up to the soil surface, then inlets were closed. On the other hand, in Rabi season a survey was conducted for recording the information on use of pond for irrigation and cropping pattern in the locality. Initially data were collected from 10 farmers through personal interview to know the existing pond characteristics, cropping pattern and pond utilization.

Achievement/Findings:

During the Aman (July-November) season, total rainfall was 2137 mm. It was observed that there was no water stress in Aman rice due to huge rain occurred and stored in the rice field. The grain yield was 3.56 t/ha. From the analysis of rainfall and FR storage, it was observed that at the end of Aman season (November) 66% (34.15 m³) stored water was available in the FR. It is observed that there is a scope to cultivate Rabi crop by using FR water.
