Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to determine the fluctuation of groundwater level over time and its relationships with rainfall; and to determine water quality including arsenic. The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Comilla, Habigonj, Bhanga and Sonagazi. Maximum and minimum groundwater levels at different BRRI stations during 2008-09. During this period maximum lowering of groundwater was observed in March/April and minimum in September/October. The highest depth was found in Gazipur and lowest in Sonagazi area. The results showed that the groundwater level at BRRI farm Gazipur is lower in 2008-09 than the previous years which indicated that the groundwater table is gradually declining year after year. The lowering may be due to increased pumping demand and scanty rainfall from November to March.The study indicated that Gazipur, Rajshahi, Comilla, Bhanga and Kustia area are suitable for deep tubewell and Rangpur, Satkhira and Sonagazi are suitable for shallow tubewell based irrigation development. This year the total rainfall in Gazipur area was only 1704 mm which was less than the previous years. It was observed that the highest rainfall was in July and there was no rainfall from November to February. The ground water is going down day by day. Therefore, ground water should be used carefully and judiciously.

Methodology:

Available water level recorder was used for measuring groundwater fluctuation. Rainfall data was collected from nearest meteorological stations. Data were recorded weekly from BRRI farm Gazipur and different Regional Stations.
