To assess the effect of age of seedling and spacing on the yield performance of cultivar Binadhan-6 under the SRI technique an experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during Bora season of 2005- 2006. Four seedling ages namely, 10, 15, 20 and 25 days, and five spacing- 20 cm x 15 cm, 40 cm x 40 cm, 35 cm x 35 cm, 30 cm x 30 cm and 25 cm x 25 cm were included in the treatments. The yield parameters such as plant height, number of bearing tillers hill-1, number of grains panicle-1 and 1000-grain weight were higher and number of non-bearing tillers hill-1 and sterile spikelets panicle-1 were lower with 10 day-old seedling and 40 cm x 40 cm spacing and also coupling with them. The grain, straw and biological yields and harvest index were higher at 10 day-old seedling and 25 cm x 25 cm spacing and also in combination with 10 day- old seedling and 25 cm x 25 cm spacing. The grain, straw and biological yields and harvest index were significantly highest with 10-day old seedling at 25 cm x 25 cm spacing. Only the harvest index showed statistically nonsignificant differences due to the interaction of age of seedling and spacing.

To find out the optimum age of seedling and spacing of Boro rice cultivar Binadhan-6 under SRI technique.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during December 2005 to June 2006. The experimental field belongs to the agro- ecological region of the Old Brahmaputra Floodplain and the soil belongs to the Sonatala series (non- calcareous dark grey floodplain soil type). Binadhan-6, a high yielding bora rice cultivar, developed by the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), was used as planting material. Two sets of treatments were included in the experiment. These were four levels of age of seedling viz, i) 10 day-old seedling (A1), ii) 15 dayold seedling(A2), iii) 20 day-old seedling (A3) and iv) 25 dayold seedling (A4), and five levels of spacing viz. i) 20 cm x 15 cm (So) [Recommended], ii) 40 cm x 40 cm (S1), iii) 35 cm x 35 cm (S2), iv) 30 cm x 30 cm (S3) and v) 25 cm x 25 cm (S4) . The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The sprouted seeds were broadcast in the nursery beds with an interval of 5 days starting from 14 December 2005 to get the seedlings of different ages. Cowdung was applied at the rate of 10 t ha-1 during the land preparation. In addition, urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied at the rate of 215, 180, 100, 20 and 4 kg ha-1, respectively. Urea was top dressed in the ratio of 25:50:25 at 10 days after transplanting (DAT), active tillering stage (30 DAT) and at panicle initiation stage (120 DAT), respectively. Seedlings were transplanted using one seedling hill-Ion 7 January 2006 following the age and spacing as per experimental treatments. Transplanting was done by placing the seedlings in L shaped manner at 1-2 cm depth within 30 minutes of uprooting. At the full maturity of crop five hills (excluding border hills) were selected randomly from each unit plot and uprooted before harvesting for recording of necessary data on yield and yield components. The crop was harvested at full maturity when 90% of the seeds became golden yellow in colour. The harvested crops were threshed by pedal thresher and the fresh weight of grain and straw yield recorded plot wise. The grains were cleaned and grain yields were converted to 14% moisture content as determined by the Digital Grain Moisture Meter (Model TD-5). The collected data were statistically analyzed using the ANOV A technique and mean differences were adjudged by the Duncan's Multiple Range Test employing a computer package MST AT.

Based on the results it may be concluded that 10 day old seedling along with 25 cm x 25 cm spacing could be used for obtaining higher yield in boro rice especially for Binadhan-6.
