Deeprooting Ability of Some Advance Breeding Lines'1998

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

T. Aman rice cultivars usually suffer from water stress at their reproductive and early ripening stage and thus grain yield is reduced. Deep rooting ability of a variety is assumed to be related with drought resistance of a variety. An experiment was conducted in the Plant Physiology Division, BRRI, Gazipur to identify advance breeding lines having deep rooting ability in 1998. A total of 23 genotypes were grown in field under rainfed condition. AT 30-40 cm depth of soil was remarkably high than those found at 40-50 cm soil depth and 50-60 cm soil depth. The advance breeding lines IR68109-13-72-1-2-1-Raj, IR68109-13-118-4-1-13-Raj and IR68109-13-131-7-13-13-Raj produced 7-8 mg root per plant at 51-60 cm depth of soil. Since root studies under field condition is laborious and express a high degree of standard deviation, studies should be done under control condition. Both root elongation and penetration studies are being done under control condition in Plant Physiology Division.

Objectives:

To identify advance breeding lines having high root mass below 30 cm depth of soil

Methodology:

Nineteen advance breeding lines and 4 recommended varieties namely BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32, BRRI dhan33, Swarna were grown in the field under rainfed condition following recommended cultural practices. Roots were collected at flowering stage by core sampler at 30-40 cm, 40-50 cm, and 50-60 cm depth of soil. The roots were cleaned, dried in the oven at 70^oC and weighed.

Achievement/Findings:

In most of the cases the root mass produced at 30-40 cm depth of soil was remarkably high than those found at 40-50 cm soil depth and 50-60 cm soil depth. Among the varieties IR68109-13-72-1-2-1-Raj, IR68109-13-118-4-1-13-Raj and IR68109-13-131-7-13-13-Raj produced 7-8 mg root per plant at 51-60 cm depth of soil. IR68833-76-1-1-Raj produced the smallest amount of root mass at 51-60 cm depth of soil. Among the varieties Swarna produced the highest amount of roots and BRRI dhan31 had the a mallest root mass at 51-60 cm depth of soil. However, the standard deviation was high for the mean root mass for Swarna at 51-60 cm depth of soil. So the potentiality of Swarna to produce roots at the deepest soil is questionable.
