The plants were harvested at maturity and plant samples were dried in an oven at 600C for 48 hours and then ground by a grinding machine to pass through a 20-mesh sieve. Total N of the plant samples were done by digesting the samples with conc. H2SO4 in presence of catalyst mixture and hydrogen per oxide followed by distillation with NaOH and titrating with H2SO4. For the determination of P, K and S the plant samples were digested with di-acid (HNO3:HClO4 in the ratio 5:1). Phosphorus in the digest was determined by developing blue colour with reduction of phosphomolybdate complex and the colour intensity was measured colorimetrically at 660 nm wave lengths. Total K in the digest was determined using flame photometer. Total S in the digest was determined by developing turbidity by adding acid seed solution and BaCl2 crystals. The intensity of turbidity was measured by spectrophotometer at 420 nm wavelength.

1. To study the effects of different levels of arsenic contamination on nutrient and As concentration of eighteen BRRI released genotypes of Boro rice along with four US rice genotypes.

The experiment was conducted at the net-house of the Department of Soil Science of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the Boro season of 2007. The genotypes were Bala, Notrai, Dawn, Azucena, BR 1, BR 2, BR 3, BR 6, BR 8, BR 9, BR 12, BR 14, BR 15, BR 16, BR 17, BR 18, BR 19, BRRI dhan 28, BRRI dhan 29, BRRI dhan 35, BRRI dhan 36 and BRRI dhan 45. The first four genotypes were collected from USA and the rest from BRRI, Gazipur, Bangladesh. Three rates of As viz. 0, 10 and 20 μg As g−1 soil were applied to 22 rice genotypes. The trial was set in a Randomized Completely Block Design with three replications. The diameter of the pot was 24 cm and height 25 cm, and each receiving 12 kg soil. Forty days old seedlings were transplanted in the pots and three hills were placed in an equal distance and each hill consists of 3 seedlings. Urea, TSP, MoP and gypsum were applied @ 100 mg N, 25 mg P, 40 mg K and 25 mg S kg-1 soil, respectively. The entire TSP, MoP and gypsum were applied during the final pot preparation. The experiment show that both grain and straw of all rice have elevated As concentration when grown under As contaminated soils. Nitrogen content of grain and straw decreased with As contamination. Thus, the people of As contaminated areas are exposed to high As and low protein ingestion from consumption of subsistence of rice grains. High As concentration in rice straw is another possible route for entry of As in the food chain through cattle’s.
